This position is responsible for leading activities to evaluate and increase the academic and organizational performance of schools chartered by the university, and the management of strategic relationships with people and organizations, to support increased school performance and operations.

Salary & Benefits:

Minimum starting salary: $125,000.00; commensurate with experience.

PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Lead a team of professionals to ensure training, support and resources are effectively deployed to facilitate academic and organizational excellence in schools.
  • Lead a team of professionals to ensure resources are effectively deployed to provide governance support at each charter board meeting, and that the Division has an effective board training program to increase each board members' capacity to govern.
  • Oversee the annual assessment of the capacity of each school to deliver superior academic, fiscal, and organizational performance, and in the fair, accurate, and timely reporting on this assessment to university stakeholders, school boards of directors, and the public.
  • Participate in the process for reviewing applications for new charter schools, and the process to evaluate performance of an existing charter school at the end of its contract.
  • Manage strategic relationships with potential charter applicants, nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, and other partner organizations, with an emphasis on partners in East and Southeast Michigan.
  • Liaise with schools, boards and potential partners to encourage and support development of quality programming.
  • Foster and serve as a catalyst for education innovation.
  • Liaise with officials from the Michigan Department of Education, other governmental entities, and authorizing bodies.
  • Represent the Division in a variety of settings.
  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Master's degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Five (5+) years of experience building and leading diverse teams of people, including contractors and vendors, to increase quality and equity in public schools.
  • Three (3+) years of experience:
  • leading large-scale education program evaluation and subsequent strategic planning.
  • developing, implementing, and overseeing school accountability systems to rapidly increase educational program quality.
  • in charter school operations and/or oversight.
  • partnering with other individuals and organizations in East and Southeast Michigan to improve public education, including other authorizers, state associations, state education agencies, nonprofits, and foundations.
  • Speaking and presenting to a wide variety of stakeholders, representing different viewpoints.
  • One or more (1+) years:
  • developing and leading large-scale, sustained professional education initiatives.
  • leading large-scale, systemic change management.
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, analytical, and technology skills, including proficiency with office productivity software, virtual meeting platforms, and digital file management systems.
  • Demonstrated sense of personal responsibility, integrity, and accountability.
  • Ability to work as part of a collegial team of professionals that solves problems together, supports each other, and advances together.
  • Commitment to creating more equitable access to high-quality educational choices, especially for students in historically underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated political acumen and ability to navigate complex organizational stakeholder environments.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Seven or more (7+ years) of experience building and leading diverse teams of people, including contractors and vendors, to increase quality and equity in public schools.
  • Five or more (5+) years of experience:
  • leading, supervising and coaching teams into success.
  • leading large-scale education program evaluation and subsequent strategic planning.
  • developing, implementing, and overseeing school accountability systems to rapidly increase educational program quality.
  • in charter school operations and/or oversight.
  • partnering with other individuals and organizations in East and Southeast Michigan to improve public education, including other authorizers, state associations, state education agencies, nonprofits, and foundations.
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field of study.
  • Established relationships with major nonprofit, philanthropic, and other relevant organizations in East and Southeast Michigan.
  • Experience working in, or with, a higher education institution, particularly colleges of education, to advance innovations in education.
  • Knowledge of specialty K-12 programs such as preschool, college and technical education, and Montessori and how they contribute to the educational landscape to meet student needs.
