School Counselor

Title: School Counselor
Reports to : Principal
Job Goal: The School Counselor is part of the leadership team and oversees students at Saint Anselm. Through individual meetings and small and large group guidance activities, the counselor provides services which contribute to the students' academic and personal-social growth and development.
Performance Responsibilities
- Advises and counsels students and their families regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems.
- Remains universally accessible and gets to know every student for whom they are responsible.
- Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic and social-emotional matters.
- Provides ongoing peer mediation as well as mental health assistance as needed.
- Facilitate Social Emotional programing aligned with our Catholic Identity.
- Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters including academic modifications and/or building accommodations. Attend all meetings with teacher and support services coordinator as needed.
- Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual students’ academic and social-emotional needs and abilities.
- Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures where appropriate.
- Provides counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists.
- Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student support.
- Collaborates with Saint Anselm staff members as well as Dearborn Community Schools, Speech and Language Pathologist, Social Workers, Occupational and Physical Therapists to implement student Building Accommodation Plan and attend all meetings with team to discuss students of concern.
- Collaborate with Saint Anselm staff to evaluate and report on student progress with building accommodation plans.
- Review and analyze reports from outside resources such as doctors and therapists and convert to report to Building Accommodation Plans.
- Assist Saint Anselm team by evaluating admission requirements where appropriate.
- Act as primary point of contact for High School Placement, and applications.
- Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.
- All other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to Catholic education and the ability to model behavior consistent with the mission and philosophy of Saint Anselm Catholic School.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Excellent interpersonal and relational skills; demonstrate professionalism, initiative, organization, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively in a dynamic school environment.
- Proficiency in technology, including Microsoft Office and student information systems FACTS, with a strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
- Flexibility and adaptability in responding to student needs within a faith-based, ministerial setting.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive information.
- Successful completion of all required background checks and clearances.
- Professional demeanor and presentation consistent with the expectations of a Catholic school environment.
- Knowledge of and commitment to abide by the policies and expectations set forth by the Archdiocese of Detroit, including the standards for Catholic school employees.
Education and Experience
- A master’s degree (or working towards) in School Counseling of from an accredited university preferred
- Minimum 3-5 years in school counseling experience preferred
- State of Michigan School Counselors License preferred or Michigan Teaching Certificate with School Counselor endorsement preferred
