Industrial Automation Engineer, ABB Symphony+ & Rockwell Controls

Your expertise will anchor safe, reliable production at our Mt. Clemens, MI site by elevating the performance of our ABB Bailey Infi90/Symphony+ DCS, Rockwell PLC platforms, IP21 historian, and Process Control Network. You’ll turn operational challenges into automation opportunities, reduce manual work and errors, and guide teams through the rigor of PSM processes.

What you’ll own

• Technical leadership for process control and automation at the site, including day-to-day support and long-term improvements.
• Design input and standards for capital projects involving DCS/PLC architectures, I/O strategy, and control narratives.
• Identification and deployment of automation to streamline manufacturing and business processes.
• Safety instrumented functionality in partnership with the PSM lead and Site Interlock Guardian, including Safety Interlock Specifications.
• Process control documentation stewardship: creation, revision, and governance.
• Training and upskilling of engineers and technical staff.
• Active participation in MOC, PHA, PSSR, and related PSM activities.

How you’ll work

• Partner closely with line leadership, technical staff, operators, and mechanics to capture requirements and deliver resilient control solutions.
• Collaborate across functions to reconcile competing priorities and drive consensus.
• Balance immediate troubleshooting needs with strategic modernization initiatives.

Qualifications

• BS in Engineering preferred; otherwise 10+ years of industrial controls/automation experience required.
• 3+ years minimum in process control; 5+ years preferred.
• Demonstrated strength in configuring, documenting, and troubleshooting DCS/PLC systems.
• Prefer hands-on experience with ABB Bailey Infi90/Symphony+ and Rockwell PLCs.
• Prefer working knowledge of AspenTech InfoPlus.21 (IP.21).
• Prefer experience at a PSM-regulated site.
• Ability to research policies and advise both on-site personnel and other Axalta locations.
• Proactive, adaptable, detail-focused, and an exceptional troubleshooter.
• Clear communicator who can simplify complex control concepts for diverse audiences.
• Comfortable collaborating as a peer with operators, maintenance, and engineers; accountable and self-driven.
• Travel: approximately 5–10%.
