Job Summary:

Take part in establishing and implementing organization policies and procedures in regard to local and federal health and safety regulations. Ensure compliance with regulations and procedures by carrying out and analyzing regular audits of laboratories and facilities. Provide information and training in emergency response procedures, environmental, hazardous material handling, and industrial hygiene policies. Manage the collection, storage, transportation, and shipping of hazardous waste. Provide supervision of one hourly personnel.

Responsibilities

· Conduct health and safety audits; both compliance and program based

· Prepare comprehensive written reports with clear findings and recommendations

· Monitor, measure, and report on environmental health and safety performance

· Act as an environmental health and safety resource to the Groups and facilities

· Review current policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act/Regulations and other relevant workplace legislation

· Carries out health and safety objectives and programs within the facility

· Develop, implement and monitor health and safety policies and procedures of the facility

· Serve as a Lead and provide guidance and assistance to the Joint Health and Safety Committee at the facility

· Provide safety training to all managers/supervisors, employees, and Joint Health and Safety Committee, regarding their duty’s responsibilities, health safety and the law, incident investigations, hazard identification, workplace inspection and promotion of safety awareness

· Ensure health and safety orientation/job specific training for all new employees, transferred employees and/or promoted employees is conducted

· Perform risk assessment of the equipment

· Review Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and update and implement procedures and practices, and ensure training is conducted in a timely manner

· Review safety statistics, conduct trend analysis and make recommendations for continual improvements

· Review occupational illnesses and injuries to ensure lost time is minimized

· Participate in the investigation of incidents, near misses and property damage incidents. Ensures follow-up is done to minimize future exposure

· Develop, maintain and submit regulatory reports, permit renewals, communications and accurate records to appropriate agency or department

· Maintain internal and regulatory data collection reporting

· Conduct as required workplace inspections, facility audits and provide a corrective/prevention action plan complete with responsibilities and timelines

· Assist management in coordination and direction of contractors and outside agencies in areas of compliance and special projects

· Keep abreast of any safety and environmental law or regulatory changes that impact the organization

Academic Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management (or related field)

· 5 to 10 years of experience as a Safety Specialist within an industrial setting a minimum, with a background in environmental

Required Skills & Experience

· Ability to interface effectively throughout the facility's workforce

· Ability to understand regulations in order to ensure that the company complies with applicable WC (Worker’s Comp) legislation and develop effective claims management and cost control strategies

· Extensive EHS knowledge in regulatory requirements, EHS technical aspects, risk management, behavior-based safety, training, and regulatory agency enforcement is required

· Ability to review a variety of sources such as legislation on health and safety standards to become informed of the scope of employee relations cases

· Develop cost-benefit analyses for wide range of programs, such as health and safety training programs, in order to present the company with significant input to long range human resource planning

· Ability to work independently to conduct research and develop policy papers and reports. Work as team member in both internal and external working groups. Work with industry wide professional organizations, boards and with colleagues both inside and outside of their organization

· Experience with ISO 14001-2004 and 14001-2015

· Undertake continuous learning through courses, such as community college and university courses, through on-the-job initiatives and through highly developed networking and professional liaison. Attend conferences and seminars and read professional journals to learn about best practices and emerging trends in health and safety as needed

· Must be able to work independently

· Ability to coach and develop hourly personnel
