LAB ASSISTANT CORE
The Lab Assistant demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Keeping our Promise of Caring.
This individual has the documented training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens. Testing includes test authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director. The training insures the skills required for proper specimen collection, handling and processing. The skills required are implementing limited laboratory testing, proper instrument use, performing preventative maintenance and quality control policies under the supervision of the Medical Technologist.

Assist in the training of new employees under direct control of the General Supervisor.
Perform other related duties as assigned. Perform all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to, answering telephones, filing, scheduling outpatients, computerized order entry and registration of patient orders on EPIC,CERNER LIS or other applicable System.
Maintain proper communication with physicians, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, coworkers, supervision and administration.
Delivery of Laboratory reports to nursing units and outpatient treatment areas.
CLINICAL DUTIES
Follow the laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing. Perform waived tests ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology
Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies. Document all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed including troubleshooting.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Immediately notify the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Technical Supervisor.
Comply with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices. Demonstrate working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and perform proper hand washing techniques.
Collection of all specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture technique upon physician order in a timely fashion utilizing proper technique. (Position specific)
Collection of general lab samples from draw ports (Peripheral IV saline locks), documentation of training and proficiency. (Position specific)
Inspection of all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type.
Verification of collection information on computer and documentation on log sheets.
Transportation of specimens utilizing the pneumatic tube system or physical transportation to the Laboratory.
Process reference laboratory specimens for transportation with necessary documentation.
Lifepoint software ordering, resulting, testing and validation. (Position specific)
Lifepoint Client trouble shooting for Business Office workflow. (Position specific)

Must be able to effectively work with outside agencies -- Hospital Laboratories, JVHL Network Members, Reference Laboratories, Accreditinig Agencies, Physician Offices, Nursing Homes, and other laboratory clients.
Qualifications:KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
• College level Biology or Chemistry.
• LIS Applications, strong verbal and communication skills.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
• High School education or equivalent.
• Phlebotomy and/or clinical laboratory experience preferred
