The Grants and Foundations Manager is responsible for identifying and cultivating a pipeline of funding prospects, preparing and submitting timely, compelling proposals and budgets to foundation, corporate, individual and potential government sources, and tracking and reporting on funded activities. The Grant and Foundations Manager also works collaboratively with internal stakeholders and maintains communications with funders to gain increased support for Michigan Humane programs and general operating needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and develop a prospect list of grant opportunities to fulfill programmatic and general operating budget needs including organizations whose funding priorities align with Michigan Humane’s mission and programs, with accountability to annual foundation fundraising goals.
  • Coordinate and develop grant requests by establishing timelines that outline tasks and deadlines. Submit requests and reports within funder deadlines.
  • Research and collect data and study findings to support grant proposals.
  • Draft and edit high quality, compelling LOI’s, grant proposals, grant reports, and acknowledgement letters, with special attention to spelling, grammar, and style.
  • Understand programmatic work through experiences and work closely with operations teams to develop grant requests and budgets.
  • Maintain existing grant relationships, following through on reports and communications as required in grant agreements.
  • Respond to inquiries from funders strategically and in a timely manner with guidance from leadership.
  • Maintain a library of proposals and grant language for all Michigan Humane programs to simplify workflow.
  • Work with data management, marketing and finance teams to track program outcomes and gather performance data and information in a timely manner to meet reporting requirements.
  • Work closely with finance team to track restricted gifts, ensuring releases are on track to meet grant agreement requirements.
  • Maintain grant records in donor database.
  • Attend informational meetings on grant opportunities hosted by funders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including research, preparation of program reports, support for donor visits and tours, and assisting with special events.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in marketing, communications or nonprofit management preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years grant writing and reporting experience with a nonprofit or government agency.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency, Internet and computer software skills are required.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising software experience preferred. Experience with grant reporting databases preferred.
  • Knowledge of metro Detroit foundations is a plus.
