Pharmacy Technician OPD (Outpatient) (Per diem)
Overview
The Pharmacy Department at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute places emphasis on the values of reliability, professionalism, cooperation, teamwork, communication, positivity and inclusiveness. The Pharmacy Technician II, OPD (Outpatient) is responsible for providing support to pharmacy operations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician II, OPD will staff in pharmacy locations/areas as required. Additional responsibilities may include training and orientation of new staff and providing support to more junior staff members.
This is a per diem position scheduled for 12–16 hours per week, primarily on Mondays and Tuesdays. Additional hours may be available based on coverage needs. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pharmacy Technician Duties:
Practices as a pharmacy technician in accordance with all federal, state, DFCI and Joint Commission policies, regulations and standards. Fills medication orders according to policy, including proficiency with the most complex prescriptions and compounds. Ensures timely delivery and/or completion of medication orders and/or supplies. Utilizes multiple systems such as EHR (Electronic Health Record, Inventory Management Systems and other systems to complete and document duties. Troubleshoot as necessary. Maintains the Pharmacy inventory: sorting, stocking, rotation of stock and expiration date checking. Accurately sends and receives inventory orders with minimal assistance. Performs and documents quality control steps as required (e.g., barcode scanning, etc.). Performs cleaning of sterile and non-sterile areas of the pharmacy as assigned. Conducts the training and orientation of new staff members in any area. Communicates and escalates issues or problems. Provides ongoing support and mentorship to more junior staff. Creates and revises training documentation for staff education.
Outpatient Technician Duties:
Resolves complex and urgent patient questions and responds to inquiries from providers, including appropriate escalation of issues when needed. Handles complex claims-related adjudication and billing/insurance issues with little need for assistance. Provides cross-coverage as appropriate by location (e.g. Research Pharmacy, Patient Care Coordinator roles).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Ability to accurately perform complex pharmaceutical calculations.
Ability to utilize pharmacy technology systems.
Full proficiency in compounding of non-sterile products.
Ability to independently troubleshoot issues and assist in resolution or escalation to the appropriate resource.
Ability to treat all others (fellow pharmacy staff, patients, nurses, providers, support personnel, etc.) with the utmost professionalism and respect.
Ability to effectively work within a collaborative team-focused environment.
Participate in department meetings and functions to promote a successful and efficient pharmacy workgroup.
Ability to train and orient new staff.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills (ability to analyze information objectively and make a reasoned judgment).
Strong attention to detail.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education:
High school graduate or currently enrolled in an accredited entry-level degree program for Pharmacy or a related field.
Minimum Experience:
2 years of pharmacy technician experience.
License/Certification/Registration:
Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician required. National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) must be obtained within 1 year of hire date.

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
