OUTPATIENT PHLEBOTOMIST

Overview: The Phlebotomist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation . This individual has the documented training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens. Testing includes test authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director. The training insures the skills required for proper specimen collection, handling and processing. The skills required are limited laboratory testing, proper instrument use, performing preventative maintenance and quality control policies under the supervision of the Coordinator/Manager. Responsibilities:

D emonstrates a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation, and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable.

A ssists in the training of new employees under direct control of the General Supervisor.

P erforms other related duties as assigned.

P erforms all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to, answering telephones, filing, scheduling outpatients, computerized order entry and registration of patient orders on LIS.

M aintains proper communication with physicians, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, coworkers, supervision and administration.

F ollows laboratory procedures for specimen collection and suitability for testing.

P erform waived tests ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology

M aintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

A dheres to the laboratory quality control policies.

D ocument all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed including troubleshooting.

C apable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Immediately notify the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Technical Supervisor.

C omplies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices.

D emonstrate working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and perform proper hand washing techniques.

C ollects all specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture technique upon physician order in a timely fashion utilizing proper technique.

C ollects general lab samples from draw ports (Peripheral IV saline locks), documentation of training and proficiency.

I nspects all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type.

V erifies collection information on computer and documentation on log sheets.

T ransports specimens utilizing the pneumatic tube system or physical transportation to the Laboratory.

P rocesses in-house and reference aboratory specimens for transportation with necessary documentation.

P erforms EKGs using proper procedure and protocols.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

E ducation High School education or equivalent College level Biology or Chemistry

Certificate of completion from a phlebotomy program or 1 – 3 years phlebotomy experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

S trong verbal and communication skills.

K nowledge of LIS Applications

D emonstrate s a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable

Valid Driver's license and reliable transportation

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICIAL DEMANDS

Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

Frequent standing, walking, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, near vision, midrange vision, far vision, depth perception, visual accommodation, color vision.

Occasionally sitting, lifting, carrying pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, twisting, reaching, tasting/smelling, field vision.

Occasionally lifting 11 to 25 lbs.
