Director of Finance and Business

POSITION SUMMARY:
Direct and administer finance and business services including, but not limited to, financial planning, budgeting, general accounting, financial reporting, payroll, cash management, manage employee benefits and distinct insurance claims. Assure the smooth, efficient, and accurate operation of the office so that the office's maximum positive impact on the educational system can be realized as an effective part of the educational process.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
- Possess, qualify and/or willingness to obtain the Michigan School Business Officials Chief Financial Officer Certification.
- Minimum of two to three (2-3) years practical work in the accounting field; including at least one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience with software and operations of computerized financial accounting systems.
- Excellent communication (oral, written and listening) and interpersonal relations skill to maintain an effective working relationship with board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, and community members and/or legal professionals.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
PREFERRED:
- CPA designation.
- Master's Degree in Educational Administration, finance or related field.
- Minimum of four to five (4-5) years practical work in the accounting field, including at least one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience in school financial, governmental or non-profit accounting .
- Previous experience in union collective bargaining and labor relations.
- Posses a high level of integrity, dependability, and strong data analysis skills.
- Knowledge of Skyward software.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manage all accounting functions including accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, grant accounting, payroll, district revenues, bond finances, and general accounting operations.
- Develop, in collaboration with the Superintendent, the current operational and projected long-range budgets necessary to meet the educational needs of the district.
- Maintain and report long and short term cash flow activities to the Superintendent.
- Ensure proper and adequate records are maintained so that all district funds are properly safeguarded, all property is accounted for, and accurate financial reports are available to the Superintendent and Board of Education.
- Supervise activity fund accounts which include execution of procedures to ensure proper receipts for monies received, the issuance of checks upon preparation of authorization, preparation of monthly reports of fund balances and annual reconciliation of each fund account.
- Conducts year-end audit and state reporting (FID) and all business related reports required for state and federal purposes.
- Provides leadership and oversight for the annual financial audit of the district.
- Provide for annual appraisal of district buildings and movable equipment.
- Responsible for administration of employee insurance plans.
- Manage the reporting of workers' compensation claims and unemployment claims.
- Manages the district's insurance programs; including property & casualty, liability, workers' compensation and unemployment.
- Manage District's budget development and process for Federal and State grants.
- Collaborate with the Curriculum Department to develop and monitor the district's funding pertaining to State and Federal grants and other external funding programs.
- Assists with labor contract negotiations at the direction of the superintendent and provides necessary and pertinent financial data to the district negotiating team(s).
- Attends and provides financial reports at regular or special board meetings, board work sessions, and board committee meetings.
- Responsible for supervision of Business Office personnel.
- Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job duty
