Technical Specialist - Paint & E-Coating

20% Travel

Job Summary

The Coating Subject Matter Expert serves as the technical authority for coating technologies, including e-coating, pre-treatment, and powder coating. This role provides technical leadership and support across engineering, manufacturing, and R&D teams while driving innovation and process improvements. The position supports global operations, collaborates with customers, and ensures coating systems meet quality, performance, and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Support

• Provide technical expertise and support to engineering, manufacturing, and R&D teams on coating-related processes and challenges.
• Serve as the primary engineering interface with customers to ensure alignment on technical requirements and solutions.
• Communicate technical findings, recommendations, and project updates to internal and external stakeholders.
• Interpret and apply customer specifications, technical requirements, and industry standards.

Process Improvement & Innovation

• Lead cross-functional and global initiatives related to new technologies, process improvements, and industry best practices.
• Develop and implement innovative coating technologies to support evolving customer requirements.
• Identify opportunities for new applications, products, and solutions to existing technical challenges.
• Recommend and implement improvements to enhance product quality, system performance, and operational efficiency.
• Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to maintain technical leadership in coating processes.

Research & Development

• Develop and manage a pipeline of research and development projects.
• Plan and execute testing programs, development activities, design of experiments (DOE), and pre-production trials.
• Analyze engineering data and recommend design or process improvements.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to implement design modifications and improvements.

Manufacturing & Program Support

• Troubleshoot coating processes and production issues across multiple facilities.
• Support the launch of new programs, equipment installations, and manufacturing facilities.
• Prepare Requests for Quotation (RFQs) to evaluate project feasibility, costs, and potential benefits.
• Review product designs to ensure compliance with engineering standards, performance requirements, and customer specifications.

Quality & Compliance

• Conduct audits of internal operations and external suppliers within area of expertise.
• Review supplier data and provide technical guidance to ensure process control and product quality.
• Prepare project documentation, including reports, cost analyses, and business case justifications.
• Develop training materials, standard procedures, and technical documentation to support knowledge sharing.

Additional Responsibilities

• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field (required)
• Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related field (preferred)

Experience & Skills

• Extensive experience with coating technologies, including e-coating, pre-treatment, and powder coating.
• Strong understanding of automotive body and chassis manufacturing processes.
• Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and cross-functional projects.
• Experience troubleshooting complex manufacturing and process issues.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional and global teams.
