GENERAL DESCRIPTION:



The Wyoming Supreme Court, located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, seeks to hire a highly motivated and detail-oriented Staff Attorney for Chief Justice Lynne Boomgaarden. This position involves a variety of complex work duties, including mentoring and supervision of externs and term clerks. As a Staff Attorney, you will have the opportunity to conduct legal research, write memoranda and draft opinions, and perform other duties as assigned to support Chief Justice Boomgaarden and the work of the Supreme Court of the State of Wyoming. Work is performed on-site at the Wyoming Supreme Court building; however, remote work arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Wyoming Supreme Court is the final arbiter of cases that arise under state law. Its decisions are final except for cases that involve a question of federal law, which can be appealed to the United States Supreme Court. Our offices are in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which is home to Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, is a growing metropolitan area that thrives on its Western heritage.

Salary will be determined based on your valuable work experience as an attorney, recognizing your expertise and contributions to the legal field. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position supports the judge in the court’s decision-making process by ensuring the judge has the information needed to make fair decisions based on the facts presented in each case. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the judge.

Job duties include the following:

  • Reviews appeals; prepares predisposition memoranda; reviews parties’ statements of relevant facts and applicability of cited legal authority; analyzes legal issues raised by the parties; reviews and digests referring court record on appeal, and researches and analyzes law relevant to issues on appeal.
  • Works with the Justice to research, write, and edit opinions, including concurring or dissenting opinions.
  • Prepares opinions for issuance, including editing, citation, and record checking.
  • Attends meetings and training as required.
  • Observe judicial proceedings.
  • Track the appellate docket to ensure decisions are timely.
  • Compile references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations.
  • Assist with mentoring and supervision of law school externs and term clerks.
  • Expected to perform such other duties as may be necessary, assigned, and/or directed.

This position involves knowledge of:

  • Wyoming statutes, court rules, policies, and procedures.
  • General law, state law, established precedent, and sources of legal reference.
  • Application of legal principles and legal analysis.
  • Legal terminology and concepts.
  • Principles and protocols for managing official documents and records.
  • Westlaw and court case management systems.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:




Education and Experience:

Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

Work Experience: Five (5) or more years of relevant experience


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
State Bar licensure.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:



  • This position requires mobility to work in a typical office setting. The applicant must have the ability to:
    • Use standard office equipment.
    • Sit at a desk or stand for prolonged periods and work on a computer.
    • Stand and/or walk occasionally to frequently.
    • Read printed materials and computer screens.
    • Communicate in person, by e-mail, video, or over the phone.

  • Additional compensation for Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) certification.
