Database Administrator 5
Project Scope: The project involves hiring a Database Administrator (DBA) contractor to support an ongoing transition from a Sybase-dominant environment to a fully SQL Server-based infrastructure, expected to complete in approximately 3 years. The role starts as a long-term contract with the potential to transition to full-time state employment if desired by the candidate. The primary focus is augmenting the existing DBA team to handle routine and after-hours tasks, reducing workload on senior DBAs, and building capacity for the migration. Key environmental details include:
- Sybase Environment : Version 15.7 on Solaris in an X86 hardware setup within the local network.
- SQL Server Environment : Mixed versions on mixed Windows Server versions, including both on-premises servers and Azure-hosted instances, with an upcoming version update project.
Roles/Responsibilities:
- Provide hands-on assistance with Sybase ASE 15.7, including running and developing CRON jobs via Unix command line.
- Support after-hours implementations to reduce time burden on senior DBAs.
- Participate in weekly data fixes occurring on Thursdays and Fridays.
- Ensure compliance with formal change control environments.
- Assist SQL Server DBAs by handling routine tasks on mixed Windows Server versions (on-premises and Azure).
- Work with SQL Server clusters and disaster recovery processes in development, test, and production environments.
- Contribute to an upcoming SQL Server version update project.
- Leverage experience in Sybase-to-SQL Server migrations to support the ongoing 3-year transition project.
- Apply strong troubleshooting skills across both environments.
- Adhere to on-call rotation after onboarding, covering weekends as needed.
- Collaborate on scheduled projects, ensuring all overtime is pre-approved.
Mandatory Skills:
- Sybase to SQL Server (4-5 years minimum experience with Sybase and SQL)
- Candidates must be experienced in troubleshooting
- Unix/Solaris/Linux experience
- 10+ years overall experience as a Database Administrator
- Education: Bachelor's Degree
Desired Skills:
