The Opportunity

Key Responsibilities

• Design, fabricate, and repair precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures from raw materials.
• Operate and set up a variety of manual and CNC machining equipment, including lathes, mills, grinders, and EDMs.
• Interpret complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and CAD models to determine specifications for tool construction.
• Perform thorough inspections of finished tools and components using precision measuring instruments to ensure accuracy and quality.
• Troubleshoot and resolve tooling issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
• Select appropriate materials, heat treatments, and surface finishes for tool components based on application requirements.
• Conduct preventative maintenance and calibration on tooling and equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Recommended Qualifications

• Formal apprenticeship or 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Tool Maker.
• Proficiency in operating and setting up manual and CNC machine tools (e.g., mills, lathes, grinders, EDM).
• Ability to accurately read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and CAD models.
• Expertise in precision measurement using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and CMM.
• Strong understanding of various metals, alloys, and their properties, as well as heat treatment processes.

Bonus Qualifications

• Advanced proficiency in a leading CAD/CAM software suite (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam).
• Experience with specialized machining processes such as Wire EDM or 5-axis machining.
• Proven ability to design and build complex jigs, fixtures, and gauges from concept.
• Welding and light fabrication skills for tool repair and modification.
