EMS Medical Director (Coloma)

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated EMS Medical Director to provide medical oversight and guidance for our Emergency Medical Services agency. The EMS Medical Director will ensure the highest standard of patient care, maintain compliance with state regulations, and work with various Medical Control Authorities as needed. This individual will serve in a consulting capacity and will collaborate closely with EMS leadership, operations staff, and field providers. Experience with event & sports medicine is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Oversight & Protocols
- Review all clinical protocols, policies, and procedures in accordance with current medical standards, evidence-based practices, and Michigan state regulations.
- Provide medical expertise and direction for agency personnel regarding patient care guidelines and new treatment methods.
- Work with local Medical Control Authorities
- Assist in non-emergency pre-hospital care and preventative medicine program planning
- Quality Assurance & Improvement
- Oversee a Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) program to monitor clinical performance and patient outcomes.
- Analyze response data, clinical documentation, and patient care reports to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Recommend corrective actions and performance improvements as needed.
- Work with Medical Control Authorities
- Training & Education
- Collaborate with the education department to develop and deliver training programs for EMS providers (e.g., EMTs, Paramedics).
- Stay current on the latest trends in emergency medicine and communicate evidence-based updates to EMS personnel.
- Participate in provider evaluations, skill assessments, and continuing education initiatives.
- Regulatory Compliance & Liaison
- Ensure the agencys compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations, including Michigan Department of Health & Human Services and other EMS governing bodies.
- Serve as a liaison to local hospitals, medical facilities, and other healthcare providers regarding patient care and transport protocols.
- Participate in state and regional EMS committees as necessary.
- Medical Consultations & Case Review
- Provide clinical consultation for complex patient cases, unusual incidents, or high-risk calls.
- Conduct case reviews and collaborate with EMS personnel and leadership to address concerns or questions about specific patient care scenarios.
- Administrative & Leadership Duties
- Attend management and operational meetings, as required, to offer medical perspectives and strategic insights.
- Offer guidance on program development, budget considerations related to clinical operations, and grant opportunities.
- Advise on and approve the purchase of medical equipment and supplies.
Qualifications
- Licensure & Certification
- Valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine as an MD or DO in the State of Michigan.
- Board certification (or eligibility) in Emergency Medicine.
- Current DEA registration (if applicable).
- Current ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certifications (preferred).
- Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in emergency medicine, pre-hospital care, or related fields.
- Prior experience as an EMS Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, or similar leadership role is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with Michigan EMS statutes and regulations.
- Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of out-of-hospital emergency care systems, protocols, and best practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse teams.
- Proficient in reviewing and interpreting patient care data, quality metrics, and outcome reports.
- Ability to balance clinical demands with administrative and regulatory responsibilities.

Contract Structure
- This is a consulting, contractual position .
- Anticipated workload may vary based on agency needs, including routine oversights, meetings, protocol reviews, and on-call consultations.
- Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
- Flexible scheduling may be arranged to accommodate the candidates primary medical practice schedule.
