Job Title: Diesel Technician (Day Shift)
Job Description
This day-shift Diesel Technician role focuses on maintaining and repairing medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment, including engines, transmissions, and other critical systems. Depending on experience and certifications, you may work as a B Tech handling diagnostics, repairs, and inspections, or as an A Tech leading complex in-shop and on-site repairs while mentoring junior technicians and providing expert support to customers.
Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostics and repairs on truck engines, transmissions, and related components for medium and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Conduct safety inspections and routine preventative maintenance, including lubrication, filter changes, and oil changes on trucks and equipment.
- Prepare and maintain accurate handwritten and computer-generated work records of garage activities, repairs, and inspections.
- Provide clear and accurate estimates and timelines for repairs and communicate repair status to customers and team members.
- Perform DOT inspections in accordance with applicable regulations and company standards.
- Use diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot diesel engines, aftertreatment systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of equipment, including tractors, trailers, refuse vehicles, yard spotters, construction equipment, and semi-trucks.
- Complete mid-level internal engine and driveline repairs independently, including clutches and related driveline components.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain strong customer relationships by providing responsive, efficient, and high-quality service.
- Mentor and support junior field and shop technicians by sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
- Uphold the company’s purpose and core values in daily work, including quality, safety, and customer service.
- Meet or exceed established efficiency and quality targets while minimizing comebacks on completed work.
- State of Michigan Medium/Heavy Duty Mechanic Certifications or 1–2 years of experience in truck repair for B Tech-level responsibilities.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle systems.
- State of Michigan Medium/Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification – Brake.
- Ability to perform DOT inspections and adhere to safety and regulatory requirements.
- 2–4 years of experience as a truck technician or equivalent for A Tech-level responsibilities.
- Extensive knowledge of truck systems and repair techniques, including engines, driveline, brakes, and aftertreatment systems.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and repair projects simultaneously.
- State of Michigan Master Certified Medium/Heavy Duty Mechanic for A Tech-level responsibilities.
- Valid CDL-A license to support in-shop and on-site repairs and testing of vehicles.
- Section 609 EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification to work on HVAC and refrigerant systems.
- Commitment to meeting or exceeding efficiency targets of 100%, with no safety incidents and no comebacks related to quality of work over a 12-month period.
- Ability to follow and remain in compliance with all handbook rules and complete all mandatory safety training.
- Experience in diesel repair from any relevant environment, such as military service, repair shops, or fleet maintenance.
- Mechanical aptitude, including experience tinkering with vehicles, replacing brakes, and using hand tools.
- At least 1 year of preventative maintenance experience on cars or semi-trucks, including grease jobs, filter changes, and oil changes.
- Motor rebuild experience, particularly with diesel engines.
- ASE certification in relevant areas of automotive or truck repair.
- State mechanic license beyond the required medium/heavy-duty certifications.
- Three or more years of semi-truck repair experience to help balance team experience levels.
- Experience with heavy equipment repair, including construction and off-road equipment.
- Ability to work flexible shifts within a 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. window, on 8-hour days, with the option to work overtime when available.
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customers, peers, and supervisors.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation in both handwritten and computerized formats.

Work Environment
The position is based in a shop environment that supports both in-shop and occasional on-site repairs for medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment. The facility offers open bays that promote airflow in warmer months and is climate controlled, with air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter, to maintain a comfortable working temperature year-round. Technicians work with a variety of equipment, including tractors, trailers, refuse vehicles, yard spotters, construction equipment, and semi-trucks, using diagnostic tools, hydraulic equipment, and standard mechanic hand and power tools. The role follows an 8-hour day schedule with shift flexibility between approximately 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and overtime is often available but not mandatory. The shop environment emphasizes safety, adherence to company policies, and completion of all mandatory safety training. Technicians are expected to maintain a professional appearance suitable for a diesel shop setting, including appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment as required for tasks involving diesel, hydraulic systems, and heavy equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Battle Creek, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
