Sr. Manufacturing Accountant

Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Accountant with a strong background in manufacturing accounting, cost control, and factory operations. This role will serve as the financial lead for our manufacturing facility, ensuring accurate cost accounting, operational efficiency, and strategic insight into plant performance. The ideal candidate has deep , hands-on experience in manufacturing environments, understands production workflows, and can translate operational data into actionable financial reporting.
Position Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership & Controls
- Serve as the finance lead for the factory, partnering with operations, supply chain, and leadership to drive cost discipline.
- Implement and maintain internal controls across plant finance functions.
- Ensure compliance with corporate policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in writing/updating accounting procedures
Cost Accounting & Analysis
- Oversee standard costing, variance analysis, and cost-of-goods-sold reporting.
- Analyze material, labor, and overhead absorption; highlight drivers of cost variances and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop and monitor KPIs around manufacturing efficiency, yield, and scrap.
- Lead d hoc projects and reporting related to product costing, including make/buy analysis, historical cost trends, etc.
Inventory & Asset Management
- Oversee inventory valuation and controls, including cycle counts and physical inventory audits.
- Track and report on capital expenditures and asset utilization.
- Review, calculate and analyze Monthly WIP for purposes of Monthly financial reporting
Budgeting, Forecasting & Reporting
- Lead the plant’s annual budgeting and monthly forecasting processes.
- Provide timely and accurate reporting of plant financial results to management.
- Partner with operations leaders to develop financial models supporting production planning, capital expenditures, and continuous improvement projects.
- Support the external audit process by owning all inventory and COGS requests from auditors
Operational Partnership
- Act as a strategic advisor to the Plant Manager
- Evaluate the financial impact of process changes, production scheduling, and capacity utilization.
- Support lean manufacturing initiatives, cost-saving programs, and investment decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred).
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 5 years in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of cost accounting, standard costing, and variance analysis.
- Proven experience as a plant controller, cost accountant, or finance lead in a factory environment.
- Proficiency with ERP systems (preferably SAP) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in fast-paced manufacturing settings.
- Ability to travel within Michigan up to 40% annually.
