JOB TITLE: Engineering Technician I
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION : Municipal Services
DIRECT REPORT: City Engineer
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:
To participate in and perform supervision of engineering work involving responsibility for independent application of technical knowledge and skill to engineering problems in the field or office; to act as a survey technician, construction inspector of municipal engineering projects, and to engineering design work, to act on behalf of the City Engineer in his or her absence, and perform work as required.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
- Supervise and participate in the design and inspection of the construction of street, water, sewer and other municipal engineering projects.
- Supervise and participate in the inspection and design work required for the paving of streets, alleys, sidewalks, parking lots and related structures.
- Participate in the writing of specifications and contract documents for the construction of municipal engineering projects.
- Supervise and participate in field work of the checking grades for sidewalks, streets, alleys, sewer mains and water mains.
- Supervise and inspect the field work of contractors on municipal construction projects and enforce adherence to plans and specifications.
- Supervise and participate in the performance of preliminary surveys for such engineering projects as streets, alleys, sewer and water mains, buildings and other public improvements.
- Perform miscellaneous AutoCAD works as needed. Draw maps, plans and sketches from field notes, preliminary sketches, and/or GIS points collected in the field.
- Generate and maintain accurate engineering records and reports.
- Estimate labor and material costs required of proposed construction projects.
- Track project pay items and project activities for daily reports and pay applications.
- Prepare and submit estimates for partial and final payments to contractors.
- Respond to citizen complaints and concerns regarding streets, sewers, and the water system and ensure appropriate action is taken.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work alone or as part of a group.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather settings for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work overtime, potentially including after hours, nights, and weekends.
- Reasonable knowledge of mathematical principles and the ability to perform accurate engineering and surveying computations.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others and prepare written engineering reports.
- Ability to supervise other personnel.
- Ability to work effectively and maintain a satisfactory working relationship with other public employees.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- An Associates Degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university, OR a minimum of two years' experience in Civil Engineering work to include construction inspection, GIS surveying, estimating, and AutoCAD OR some combination thereof.
PREFERRED EXPEREINCE, NOT REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of methods and techniques applied to Civil Engineering design, construction, and maintenance of public projects.
- Knowledge of practices, procedures, and techniques used in GIS surveying.
- Be proficient in the operation of surveying and engineering equipment as required.
- Certifications from Ferris State's Institute of Construction Education and Training (ICET), i.e. MDOT construction materials testing certifications.
- OSHA Construction Safety Certification (10-hour or 30-hour).
