In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary : The Attendance Agent assists with student truancies, tardiness and excessive absences to promote good attendance and support high academic achievement. The Attendance agent partners with parents, staff, and students to identify problem behaviors and strategize to find solutions to increase students attendance.

Minimum Qualifications :
- Must possess and provide evidence of a valid driver's license; have access to an operable automobile and be willing to use vehicle for District business on a reimbursable basis.
- Applicant must possess and provide evidence of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Official college transcript(s) must accompany letter of interest. Preparation should include systematic study in several of the following areas: Social Casework, Child Growth and Development, Child or Family Guidance or Counseling, Education, Criminal Justice, Applied Psychology, Community Relations and Services and Mental Hygiene.
- Applicant must have two or more years full-time verified work experience in at least one of the following areas: Social Work, Counseling, Working with school-age youth and Criminal Justice.
Essential Functions :
- Investigate student non-attendance when notified by school personnel or District Central Office personnel, if student is repeatedly absent without a valid excuse, or is failing school work, or has a behavior problem, AND attempts to confer with parent fail;
- Investigate student absence reports. Student attendance must be continuous and consecutive. Verify birth certificate data as accurate and stored in the District's student data system.
- Give written notice in person or by registered mail to parent /guardian requiring child to appear at the public school on the next regular school day and continue regular and consecutive attendance, if parent/guardian fails to send child under parental control to school under Section 1561. File notice per district protocol in court having jurisdiction if parent/guardian fails to comply with notice. If parent fails, bring a legal complaint against the parent/guardian for refusal or neglect to send child to school.
- Investigate to determine correct address, birth date, parents¿ names, school attended, identify any potential cases of missing children. Provide leadership support for the student non-return and resolution of the student double count processes.
- Provide material relief for children in the form of shoes, clothing, eyeglasses, repair of hearing aids, and investigation for Goodfellow packages to support student attendance to school.
- Initiate and follow-up on legal action in connection with the above functions as directed. Report and document names and addresses of children not enrolled or in attendance at school.
- Issue work permits to minors fourteen to eighteen years of age.
- Provide for the effective utilization of the available services of community agencies in promoting the physical and mental health of children.
- Serve as a District Ambassador between school and home; educate clients about compulsory school attendance.
- Engage parents and educate through the use of parent involvement contracts; includes parent/guardian ensures pupils gets to school each day on time, ready to learn.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Security Clearance :
