Library Director

The Library Director provides visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for the Livonia Public Library system. This position reports to the Mayor and the Library Commission (a five-member advisory board), and is responsible for overseeing all library services, system-wide operations, and organizational development. The Director ensures library resources are aligned with community needs and city goals, leads all fiscal and personnel functions, and fosters an equitable and collaborative work culture. This position requires a forward-thinking leader with strong knowledge of public library administration, staff development, cooperative partnerships, and facilities oversight. Key responsibilities include the following:
- Plan and direct all phases of the operation of the library system, which includes extensive use of automation
- Develop and manage the operating, capital improvement, and other department budgets and present them to the Library Commission and the Finance Director
- Work with the Library Commission to continue to implement the strategic plan that aligns the library’s mission, goals, and objectives with community needs
- Implement modern library practices to stay competitive with neighboring communities
- Manage the repairs, safety, security, improvements, projects, procurement, and other functions of facilities management
- Oversee the care and maintenance of library buildings and grounds
The ideal candidate for this position has a master's degree in library science with an emphasis on Library Management and Administration granted by a university or library school accredited by the American Library Association. You are currently working in the library field, with five or more years of progressive responsibility. You currently possess, or are eligible to obtain by the date of hire, a Librarian’s Permanent Professional certification issued by the State of Michigan. You are innovative and passionate about the role that public libraries can play in a community, demonstrated by your membership in a professional organization such as the American Library Association.
