Job Summary:
The Social Worker provides support to students, families, and staff by addressing social, emotional, and behavioral issues that may impact a student’s academic success. This role involves conducting individual and group counseling, connecting students with community resources, and collaborating with educators to create a positive and supportive school environment. The social worker also helps with crisis intervention, provides referrals for additional support services, and advocates for students’ well-being. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for building trust and promoting student success.
Qualifications:
- Meets Michigan requirements for License as a Social Worker and eligible for School Social Work certification under Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Masters Degree in Social Work.
- Ability to assess student’s needs by the appropriate use of agency and school records through interviews of school personnel, family members and community sources and by observation of student.
- Ability to clearly interpret the results of diagnostic procedures to parents, schools and relevant others to establish follow-up procedures for monitoring student’s progress.
- Assist in developing and establishing programs for students based upon results of diagnostic procedures.
- Understand and apply the concepts of child learning and development in any diagnostic, treatment, or interpretive situation.
- Possess working knowledge of the special developmental and learning needs of students with special needs.
- Communicate diagnostic data and intervention strategies in writing and orally to relevant individuals.
- Possess applicable working knowledge of casework and/or group work treatment procedures with children.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administer appropriate tests and assessment batteries, conduct interviews and observations, and consider information from all pertinent sources in conducting comprehensive evaluations of students who have been referred as having suspected disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments and support the development and implementation of behavior plans with parents, school personnel, students and other professionals and agencies; establish procedures for follow-up and monitoring of cases as well as maintaining regular communication with building principals concerning individual cases.
- Provide direct and indirect service to students and families. Indirect services may include consultations, coordination of services with the school, development of programs within and outside the school, and making referrals to agencies and follow-up
- Complete comprehensive written reports and records on students in a clear and meaningful manner.
- Serve as a member of MTSS Teams, Child Study Team, Child Screening Committee, and similar groups to screen and assess students experiencing school-related problems and to improve existing school programs and procedures in meeting the educational needs of students.
- Serve as a member of the crisis support teams and conduct safety assessments with students as required.
- Serve as a liaison between the school, home, and community in building and maintaining positive relationships.
- Record and submit all data relevant to the School-Based Medicaid Reimbursement program.
- Serve as a member of evaluation teams, Individual Education Planning committee meetings (IEP's) Manifestation IEP meetings, and pre-expulsion committees as directed.
- Responsibility of employee to obtain and maintain all training(s), certificate(s), approval(s), etc. and provide documentation to the Human Resource office before expiration date of said document(s).
- Other duties as assigned.
