Night Custodian/Sweeper

Starting April 1, 2026- June 12th, 2026


JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Night Custodian/Sweeper

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma
  • Related work experience desirable
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Current Washington State Patrol background check
  • Current fingerprint check
  • Must comply with all District rules and regulations

Reports to: Building Principal/Lead Custodian

Supervises: Student Helpers

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

To maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strives constantly to promote the safety, health, and comfort of the students and employees.
  • Assists with maintenance and repair work, maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency, as requested or assigned.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Makes such minor building repairs and maintenance, including painting, as he/she is capable of.
  • Reports any damage to school property or major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian/principal.
  • Assists with the maintenance of inventory and recommends purchase of suitable supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Assists with keeping an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the head custodian/principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.
  • Restock soap, towels, hand cleaners, and other supplies to storage areas and use areas as needed.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are secure, that the building is accessible to sue by groups during the hours of occupancy, and before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  • Keeps the building and premises around your site safe, sanitary, and in attractive condition, free from rubbish, and maintained during inclement weather, as needed including steps, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas.
  • Remains on the school district premises when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the principal, or no other school district personnel is available.
  • Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the shift when conditions require it.
  • Sweeps and vacuums classrooms daily.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean, attractive condition and in a good state of preservation, including periodic buffing and/or shampooing, and annual gym floor maintenance.
  • Scrubs and disinfects bathroom toilets, sinks, countertops and floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Clean classroom sinks and countertops as needed.
  • Washes all entry windows/doors weekly, and washes all classroom windows on both the inside and outside at least once a year, and more frequently if necessary or requested.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the collection, storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste. Supports school recycling efforts through weekly collection, preparation for storage and pick-up.
  • Cleans all whiteboards periodically (school breaks), unless requested.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the head custodian/principal, including set-up of facilities for special events.
  • Supports the delivery and distribution of school materials, supplies and furniture.
  • Work cooperatively with custodial staff in other buildings on projects that require additional staff to accomplish, with permission for the Head Custodian or Principal.

Additional Duties may include:

  • Maintains and cares for school grounds.
  • Connects sprinkling equipment and waters lawn, fields and flower beds when required.
  • Empty outside garbage cans as needed.
  • Collects and disposes of litter, leaves and refuse.
  • Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Works in cooperation with maintenance and transportation on projects.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Work to be established by contract.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel and contract.
