Building Manager Job Description

Spirit of Christ Lutheran, Clawson

Ministry Understanding:

The Building Manager is a paid, part-time 20hr/week position of this congregation.

Position Summary: Building Manager

The Building Manager is responsible for the day-to-day care, cleanliness, and operational readiness at Spirit of Christ. This hands-on role ensures the facility remains safe, welcoming, and well-maintained for worship services, ministries, events, and community use. The Building Manager performs routine custodial duties, conducts preventive and minor maintenance, identifies and addresses small issues before they become larger problems, and supports event setup and teardown to facilitate smooth programming.

Job Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Perform daily and weekly cleaning of all church spaces, including sanctuary, restrooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, kitchens, and common areas, with attention to detail for a polished, inviting appearance.
  • Conduct routine inspections of the building and grounds to spot maintenance needs, safety concerns, or minor repairs (e.g., light bulbs, loose hardware, spills, wear on surfaces, or landscaping details).
  • Carry out or coordinate basic maintenance and repairs, such as minor plumbing, painting, HVAC filter changes, door/hardware adjustments, and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate and meet with inspectors, electricians, plumbers, and other contractors when larger issues need to be addressed.
  • Set up and take down rooms and equipment for weekend services, midweek programs, special events, weddings, funerals, meetings, and rentals (including tables, chairs, audio/visual needs, signage, and decorations).
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage areas, janitorial closets, and supplies; order custodial and basic maintenance items as needed.
  • Respond promptly to reported issues or urgent needs during church operating hours and provide on-call availability for emergencies as scheduled.
  • Ensure compliance with basic safety standards, including proper use of cleaning chemicals, secure storage, and hazard identification.
  • Collaborate with church staff, volunteers, and event coordinators to support the overall ministry mission through a well-cared-for facility.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, proactive individual who takes pride in maintaining a clean, functional, and hospitable environment that reflects the church's values. The position combines physical custodial and maintenance work with a servant-hearted approach to supporting the congregation's daily life and special gatherings.

Job Skills:

  • Custodial and cleaning expertise — Proficiency in thorough cleaning techniques for various surfaces (floors, carpets, restrooms, kitchens, sanctuary pews/furniture), proper use of cleaning chemicals/equipment (vacuums, buffers, extractors, ladders), and safe handling/storage of supplies to maintain a spotless, hygienic, and inviting space.
  • Basic facilities maintenance and repair — Ability to perform minor fixes such as replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, tightening hardware, patching small wall/ceiling damage, changing HVAC filters, painting touch-ups, adjusting doors/hardware, and identifying early signs of issues (leaks, wear, HVAC problems).
  • Setup and teardown for events — Skill in efficiently arranging/rearranging rooms (moving tables, chairs, stages, AV equipment, signage, decorations) for services, classes, weddings, funerals, meetings, rentals, and special events; includes basic knowledge of sound/lighting setup.
  • Preventive inspection and detail-oriented observation — Strong eye for small details — spotting spills, scuffs, loose items, burned-out lights, cluttered areas, or potential safety hazards during daily walkthroughs and addressing them proactively.
  • Safe equipment and tool use — Familiarity with hand tools, power tools (drills, saws), ladders, and custodial machinery; knowledge of basic safety protocols for chemicals, lifting, and working at heights.
  • Physical stamina and capability — Ability to lift/move heavy objects (tables, chairs, equipment — often 50+ lbs), bend, climb, stand/walk for extended periods, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Time management and organization — Juggling daily cleaning routines, maintenance checks, event prep, and unexpected requests while keeping storage/supply areas tidy and well-stocked.
  • Reliability and dependability — Showing up consistently (including early mornings, evenings, or weekends for events), handling keys responsibly, and being trustworthy in a facility that hosts vulnerable populations (children, elderly).
  • Servant-hearted attitude and people skills — Willingness to serve the congregation humbly, communicate courteously with staff/volunteers/event coordinators, respond helpfully to requests, and maintain a positive, respectful demeanor that aligns with church values.
  • Flexibility and adaptability — Adjusting schedule for church events, handling last-minute changes, and working independently with minimal supervision most days.

Supervision:

The Building Manager will report to Pastor Brandt, Senior Pastor, and will meet with him regularly to discuss any needs or concerns.

Evaluation and Compensation

Compensation will range from $18-$20 per hour depending on experience.

Annually, the Building Manager will have a job performance review and compensation package will be reviewed annually.

  • All staff at Spirit of Christ will be subject to a background check upon hire. The ELCA Church wide organization personnel policies are also in effect.

Application Process: Please submit a resume and cover letter to

Pastor Joel Brandt ([email protected]) and
