Summary

This position is for a Social Work Program Coordinator - who supervises a Behavioral Health Interprofessional Program (BHIP) servicing Jackson/Adrian Community-Based Outpatient Clinic.. A Mental Health Clinic BHIP consists of multidisciplinary staff and serves veterans with psychiatric - substance use - psychosocial and medical issues.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  • Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited
  • NOTE: A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work
  • Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work
  • Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level

  • Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f)
  • May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)

  • Social Worker-Program Coordinator GS-12 Experience and Education
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level
  • Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment - demonstrating progressively more professional competency
  • Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship - or equivalent supervised professional experience

  • Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level - and must be able to provide supervision for licensure

  • In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation - negotiation - and monitoring
  • Knowledge and ability to write policies - procedures - and/or practice guidelines for the program
  • Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program
  • Skill in organizing work - setting priorities - meeting multiple deadlines - and evaluating assigned program area(s)

  • Physical Requirements: The work of the social worker is largely office based and sedentary with some community-­based care with moderate activity
  • The incumbent must be able to operate a government vehicle several hours each day - walk up to a mile at a time - climb 2 to 3 flights of stairs at a time - and lift small objects
  • No manual labor is required above ordinary situations
  • The incumbent must be capable of using a computer given all clinical charting is electronic.

Duties

  • VA Careers - Social Work: Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include - but are not limited to: The incumbent has broad program management responsibilities - which include the operation and management of key clinical - training - or administrative activities for a Behavioral Health Interprofessional Program in the Mental Health Clinic
  • Responsibilities include knowledge - development - and implementation of programs - policies - and procedures for the Behavioral Health Interprofessional Program - as well as oversight of administrative and programmatic resources
  • Has direct responsibility for the professional activities of multidisciplinary staff (Psychiatrists - Nurses (RN and LPN) - Nurse Practitioners - Psychologists - Social Workers - Pharmacists - and Peer Support Specialists)
  • Monitoring of outcomes using a data-driven quality assurance process for a program that delivers specialized - complex - highly professional services that are important components of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System - and significantly affect the health care provided to veterans
  • Responsible for compliance with all accreditation - VACO - and hospital requirements - policies - and procedures
  • Serves on committees representing the VAAAHS Mental Health Service as needed
  • Provides clinical consultation to various disciplines and levels of training (psychology practicum students - psychology interns - psychology postdoctoral residents - psychiatry residents - nursing - medical residents - medical students - social work trainees)
  • Provide leadership - guidance - and consultation on staff education and development
  • Provides back-up coverage for Mental Health Service staff as requested to do so by the Chief and/or his/her delegates - Mental Health Service
  • Completes treatment planning/goal setting - case management - consultation and referral(s) to service providers and specialty treatment clinics - resource utilization and development - advocacy - crisis intervention - education and prevention - case/care coordination - and supportive counseling
  • The Social Worker has the ability to provide evidence-based individual - group - and advanced level care management interventions used in the treatment of Veterans with psychiatric diagnosis
  • Fulfill ethical responsibilities to Veterans - colleagues and VA in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics - VHA Code of Ethics - and local ethical policies - which include but are not limited to compliance with all laws and regulations
