Job Description
The SolidWorks Design Engineer designs and develops custom mechanical solutions that translate customer problems into high-quality, manufacturable products. This role owns the full lifecycle of assigned components—from initial concept and quoting through detailed design, simulation, and delivery—while collaborating closely with sales and engineering teams to integrate new products into complete solutions.
Responsibilities
- Translate customer problems and requirements into innovative and practical new product design solutions.
- Create accurate customer quotes for components, including scope of work, timing, and estimated cost.
- Own the delivery of assigned component solutions from concept through production, ensuring cost, fit, function, and timing targets are met.
- Develop detailed 3D models and drawings using SolidWorks, with a focus on sheet metal, metal bending, tube bending, and fabrication.
- Perform FEA/CAE simulations and design analysis, including load testing and design validation, to ensure structural integrity and performance.
- Collaborate closely with Sales Engineers to incorporate new products into broader customer solutions and van outfitting projects.
- Support the creation and maintenance of mechanical engineering best practices, design standards, and processes.
- Coach and mentor engineers in the department on processes and engineering excellence to build team capability.
- Work with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing and sales, to ensure designs are feasible, efficient to produce, and aligned with customer expectations.
- Communicate with customers as needed to clarify requirements, present design concepts, and support technical discussions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design workflows, simulation practices, and documentation within the engineering team.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience designing in SolidWorks, or strong design experience in another CAD software with familiarity in SolidWorks.
- Hands-on experience with sheet metal design, including metal bending, tube bending, and fabrication processes.
- Practical experience with FEA/CAE tools and simulation, including load testing and design simulation for mechanical components.
- Strong mechanical engineering and mechanical design skills, with an understanding of structural behavior and manufacturability.
- Ability to create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings suitable for manufacturing.
- Capability to manage multiple design tasks from concept to delivery while meeting cost, fit, function, and timing requirements.
- Effective communication skills to work with sales teams, customers, and internal engineering colleagues.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work within a small, close-knit engineering team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is preferred.
- Experience with OEM environments is beneficial.
- stamping, steel design, or related metal fabrication industries is a plus.
- Experience with AutoCAD for complementary 2D drafting and layout work is advantageous.
- Familiarity with simulation-driven design and finite element analysis best practices.
- Interest in supporting products across diverse markets such as HVAC, telecommunications, logistics, automotive, and skilled trades.
- Ability and willingness to coach and support other engineers in process adherence and engineering excellence.
Work Environment
You will work on a small engineering team of approximately 6–7 people in an office cubicle setting within a large manufacturing facility of about 130,000 square feet. The environment combines office-based design work with close proximity to manufacturing operations, enabling practical collaboration on fabrication and assembly considerations. The role involves regular interaction with the sales team and occasional customer calls to discuss requirements and design solutions. The organization supports large-scale van outfitting and serves a variety of markets, including HVAC, telecommunications, logistics, automotive, and skilled trades, offering exposure to diverse applications and continuous learning opportunities.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Adrian, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $49.00/hr.
