Job Summary

The Social Worker will help support teens, advisors, staff and parents of the BBYO community in addressing the mental health and wellness needs of its members. This position will be employed and supervised by Jewish Family Service (JFS) and based full-time within BBYO Michigan.

Principal Accountabilities

Programming – Develop and implement mental health and wellness-focused programs, driven by and in partnership with teen leaders. Train and oversee the Nefashot program, supporting efforts in integrating mental health support within each regional chapter. Implement and manage program activities in alignment with relevant grants, including but not limited to grants from We Need 2 Talk and the Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council.

Training – Seek out professional development opportunities and share knowledge with other staff. Attend BBYO staff conferences and relevant JFS trainings. Plan and implement trainings or support community partners to provide trainings as needed for teens, advisors and staff. Provide regular Youth Mental Health and/or Teen Mental Health First Aid Trainings.

Teen Mental Health Support – Provide prevention, intervention and crisis response for youth members of BBYO adhering to BBYO protocol and use of evidenced-based tools and treatment modalities. Assess areas of needs of youth, both as a collective group and as individuals, and determine appropriate means to address needs either one-on-one or via group through monitoring the emotional well-being of participants, observation of participants, and follow up on any potential issue and alertness to issues that may arise from pre-existing family situations such as recent death, divorce or serious illness in the family. Hold open office hours to meet with teens.

Staff/Advisor Support - Monitor the emotional well-being of advisors and staff. Help develop strategies for success for youth in need while assisting staff in creating an environment where youth feel emotionally supported and physically safe. Provide guidance to staff as they deal with teens having diagnosed disorders and/or participant behavior such as aggression, homesickness, teasing, or bullying. Work with staff to develop and implement clinically appropriate interventions.

Parental Support – Provide guidance to parents while addressing teens’ mental health needs and help navigate mental health referrals or resources for families. Engage with teens and families as needed to create a plan of support and action to help address mental health and inclusion challenges. Communicate via phone, e-mail and/or in-person meetings based on the needs of the family; work with the family to recommend clinically appropriate intervention and resources.

Policy Development – Help develop and implement region-wide mental health policies and procedures for conventions, chapter and regional programming.

Scheduling – This position requires full-time hours but on a flexible schedule, as working schedule will vary depending on events. The position requires consistent after-hours work, primarily evenings and weekends, and is based out of the BBYO office. Mandatory attendance is required for 3-5 weekend overnight conventions, one of BBYO's summer programs, Staff Conference, and International Convention. Opportunities for day camp or summer camp roles may be available.

Record Keeping – Maintain necessary documentation as required, by preparing and completing, in a timely manner, all required records and reports for all assigned activities. Responsible for gathering and maintaining data required for funders • Ambassadorship - Support both agency operations by appropriately representing Jewish Family Service and BBYO in all forums and by demonstrating commitment to agency philosophy, mission, goals, policies and procedures.

Conduct - Maintain standard of the profession by following the principles of professional ethics and all applicable codes of ethics.

Compliance – Adhere to standards and requirements of all external accrediting/licensing bodies by attending staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned.

Networking / Promotion – Promote the agency by ensuring an understanding of program services available for teens and families and publicizing activities and accomplishments. Attend Teen Mental Health Workgroup meetings at Jewish Family Service and conduct outreach with community members as appropriate.

Security and Privacy – Adhere to agency and client protection policies by regularly acclimating yourself with the JFS privacy, safety and security policies made available within the employee handbook.

Employee Philanthropy – Participate annually in agency and partner related philanthropic activities and campaigns.

Mission Dedication – Embody the mission and values of JFS in all work done on behalf of the agency. Utilization of the JFS key strategies will ensure success in this accountability.

Misc . – Other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Previous experience with program development, community organizing, training and clinical experience working with youth and families. Not required, but previous experience in a youth group or camp would be beneficial.

Education : Minimum of a master’s degree in the mental health field.

Certifications or Licenses Required : Limited licensure required, full licensure preferred.

• Clinical Framework – Understand and apply basic theoretical models and perspectives to successfully resolve teen scenarios over short and long term periods.

• Crisis Intervention – Knowledgeable in crisis intervention, with the ability to implement crisis interventions, and will use BBYO's protocol to support teens and staff.
