Progressive Die & Sheet Metal Tooling Design Engineer

Day in the Life

Step into a fast-paced sheet metal stamping and forming environment where you’ll collaborate daily with Engineering, Product Development, Sales, and Manufacturing. Your mission: convert ideas into robust tooling and product designs that run reliably on the shop floor.

What You’ll Do

• Design precision tools and dies to engineering standards while meeting schedule commitments.
• Produce complete 2D prints and 3D models for components and assemblies used in manufacturing and tooling.
• Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), including spare and wear items, ensuring accuracy and traceability.
• Keep CAD files, drawings, and documentation organized, current, and easy to find.
• Partner with tool room personnel to diagnose tooling issues and iterate design revisions quickly.
• Join design reviews to evaluate customer requirements, production constraints, and schedule impacts.
• Prepare drawing packages and documentation for internal manufacturing teams and external customers.
• Support conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases alongside the Engineering team.
• Develop preliminary die concepts, strip layouts, and detailed tooling designs for new and existing parts.
• Verify designs align with quoted assumptions, machine capabilities, and customer specifications.
• Select standard components and specify materials/parts to enable timely procurement.
• Track progress and communicate status throughout build and prototype phases.
• Assist with training and mentoring team members involved in tooling, design, or prototyping.
• Design prototype blanks and fixtures when needed.
• Adhere to company quality systems, environmental standards, and customer quality requirements.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering preferred. Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, CAD Design, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Experience: Formal training and hands-on experience in tool and die design or engineering.
• Technical: Extensive CAD experience with Siemens NX and SolidWorks; strong 3D modeling; ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documentation; working knowledge of GD&T; proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office.
