CNC Machinist Weekend 3rd

Grand Rapids, MI
Job Title: CNC Machinist – Weekend 3rd Shift
Job Description

Join a precision aerospace machining facility as a CNC Machinist on the weekend 3rd shift, where you will operate advanced 5-axis CNC mills and lathes to produce complex, close-tolerance components for defense applications. You will start with comprehensive training on 1st shift before transitioning to the weekend 3rd shift, working with sophisticated equipment in the HMPT department and contributing to the production of high-precision parts for military and aerospace systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operate 5-axis CNC mills and lathes to produce the required number of accurate parts in a timely manner according to customer process documentation.
  • Run multiple CNC machines simultaneously when required, maintaining quality and productivity standards.
  • Correctly set up jobs on assigned machines, including performing tool changes and verifying proper tooling and fixturing.
  • Perform first piece, in-process, and last piece inspections using micrometers, calipers, comparators, gauges, and CMM equipment in accordance with documented procedures.
  • Interpret and follow blueprints, drawings, and process documentation to ensure parts meet specifications and tight tolerances.
  • Utilize GD&T principles to understand and achieve geometric dimensioning and tolerancing requirements on complex aerospace and defense components.
  • Conduct data collection and communication tasks in Job Boss and other required applications to accurately record production and quality information.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance on CNC equipment to ensure proper operation and minimize downtime.
  • Diagnose and correct basic equipment or tooling issues, escalating more complex problems as needed.
  • Work within the HMPT department to manufacture parts for defense-related products, maintaining a strong focus on gauging and precise measurement.
  • Collaborate with process engineers, quality personnel, and team members to support continuous improvement and efficient workflow.
  • Follow all shop safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies while maintaining a clean and organized work area.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of CNC machining experience on 5-axis machines.
  • Firm understanding of machining center theory, including x, y, and z axes, as well as edge and centerline pickup.
  • Proficiency in operating CNC mills and CNC lathes in a production or job shop environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings for complex machined components.
  • Strong skills in quality inspection using micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, thread gauges, indicator gauges, height gauges, optical comparators, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
  • Hands-on experience performing machine set-ups, including tooling changes and part fixturing.
  • Comfort working with tight tolerances and complex geometries typical of aerospace and defense parts.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with 5-axis DMG mills in a production or job shop environment.
  • Background operating Citizen Swiss lathes or similar CNC lathe equipment.
  • Familiarity with GD&T principles as applied to precision aerospace and defense components.
  • Experience in a job shop machining center, particularly supporting aerospace or defense industries.
  • Ability to use manufacturing software such as Job Boss or comparable production tracking systems.
  • Interest in participating in structured skill-level training programs to advance machining capabilities.
  • Willingness to pursue apprenticeship opportunities through community college or similar programs to deepen technical expertise.
Why Work Here?

You will join a precision-focused organization that supports mission-critical aerospace and defense applications, offering clear pathways for growth and development. A structured skill level training program provides incremental pay increases as you advance through levels 1 to 4, along with additional quality training certification incentives and a 90-day performance review increase. An apprenticeship program through a local community college further supports your long-term career development in advanced manufacturing. The culture values technical excellence, continuous learning, and the contributions of employees with diverse backgrounds, including those with military experience, while promoting a strong sense of purpose through work that supports fighter jets, ground vehicles, and other defense equipment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a job shop machining center serving the aerospace industry, producing complex parts in small to medium runs typically ranging from 20 to 70 pieces. The work involves maintaining very close tolerances and working with sophisticated equipment such as 5-axis DMG mills and Citizen Swiss lathes within the HMPT department. Training initially takes place on 1st shift for approximately 30 to 90 days before transitioning to the designated shift. Available shifts include a 10-hour shift Monday through Thursday with a flexible start time between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., as well as 12-hour shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., each with associated shift premiums. The environment is fast-paced, quality-driven, and highly technical, with a strong emphasis on precision measurement, gauging, and adherence to aerospace standards.
