Bus Mechanic, Brighton RTC
Position Summary
The Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and continuous operation of the districts transportation fleet. This position is responsible for diagnosing repairing and maintaining district vehicles and buses at peak performance to minimize interruptions to educational programs. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate maintenance records performing complex repairs and collaborating with team members to uphold the highest standards of safety and functionality.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
The following duties are essential functions of the job:
Vehicle Maintenance & Repair:
- Diagnose repair and adjust all vehicle systems (e.g. engine transmission electrical brakes) utilizing standard shop equipment.
- Perform troubleshooting and related repairs on district vehicles and equipment.
- Possess a thorough knowledge and ability to repair components across all vehicle systems.
- Conduct the annual State Police bus inspection as required.
Documentation & Safety:
- Maintain complete and accurate maintenance and repair records for all district vehicles and equipment.
- Immediately report all hazardous conditions to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Recommend major equipment and vehicle replacements as necessary.
- Maintain garage tools and equipment in a safe and operational condition.
Collaboration:
- Collaborate effectively with bus drivers regarding maintenance concerns and inspection findings.

Required Qualifications
Certifications & Licenses
Required:
- Valid Drivers License.
- CDL-BPS License or the ability to obtain it within 60 days of employment.
- State Master Heavy Duty Truck Certification.
Preferred:
- Master ASE Certification.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of related experience is preferred.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Technical: Proficiency in basic mathematical operations and ability to interpret numerical data including repair manuals and diagnostic codes.
- Communication: Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills; ability to read interpret and communicate safety rules operating instructions and procedure manuals effectively.
- Reasoning: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve various maintenance situations efficiently.
- Knowledge of district requirements and policies.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to perform physical tasks including standing walking lifting and reaching.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
- Required visual acuity and manual dexterity for equipment operation and complex repair work.
Work Environment:
- Work near moving mechanical buses and equipment.
- Exposure to toxic chemicals cleaning solvents and outdoor weather conditions.
- Ability to work in a loud environment with occasional very loud noise levels.
The employee must remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout employment.
