Position Summary
The Special Education and Student Support Coordinator provides leadership, oversight, and technical assistance to ensure district-wide compliance with special education regulations, including the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE) and federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This position supports staff in evaluation processes, IEP development, and compliance timelines, while collaborating with building teams and district leadership to ensure high-quality, legally compliant services for students with disabilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Compliance & Timeline Management
- Monitor and ensure adherence to all initial evaluation and reevaluation timelines as outlined in MARSE.
- Track, review, and communicate compliance deadlines related to evaluations, IEPs, and required reporting.
- Ensure staff adherence to federal IDEA Part B requirements and support Child Find obligations under IDEA Part C and Part B.
- Assist the Director with accurate and timely state reporting, including initial IEP count submissions.
- Review documentation and due dates to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Evaluation & Eligibility Oversight
- Provide guidance on disability categories under MARSE and required evaluation components.
- Support staff in the development and review of Review of Existing Evaluation Data (REED) documentation.
- Assist teams in determining the need for evaluations under Child Find requirements.
- Guide staff in developing comprehensive and compliant evaluation plans.
- Coordinate and support out-of-state evaluations in accordance with MARSE rules.
- Review evaluation reports to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
IEP & Instructional Support
- Support IEP teams in analyzing data to determine appropriate supplementary aids, supports, and services.
- Assist in the development of compliant, high-quality IEPs.
- Provide guidance on Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and Positive Behavioral Support Plans (PBSP).
- Ensure all required documentation and paperwork components meet compliance standards.
504 & General Education Collaboration
- Review and support initial Section 504 evaluations and documentation.
- Collaborate with building teams in the development and implementation of initial 504 plans.
Staff Support & Professional Guidance
- Provide ongoing coaching and technical assistance regarding evaluation processes, compliance, and documentation.
- Support staff in determining appropriate evaluation plans or the need for evaluation for students on their caseloads.
- Lead team discussions regarding eligibility, evaluation needs, and compliance considerations.
- Communicate proactively with staff regarding compliance expectations, timelines, and updates.
Leadership & District Collaboration
- Partner with building principals and teams to coordinate supports for students with disabilities.
- Assist the Director with the development and implementation of procedures for transferring students with disabilities.
- Monitor Supports and Services Documentation (SSD) and coordinate with building teams prior to state assessments.
- Serve as a district resource for complex cases and compliance-related problem solving.
Qualifications
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Special Education endorsement (required) .
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field of education (required).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE) and federal IDEA Part B and Part C regulations.
- Experience with special education evaluations, eligibility determination, IEP development, and compliance monitoring.
- Strong understanding of disability categories and required evaluation components, including REED development.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to lead and support multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to analyze data and guide teams in instructional and compliance-based decision-making.
- Progress toward obtaining supervisory credentials as outlined by the Michigan Department of Education, which may include enrollment in or completion of a program leading to a full administrative certificate (required or preferred based on district discretion).
- Demonstrated leadership experience or capacity to function effectively in a district-level leadership role.
Compensation
Salary and benefits to be determined based on qualifications and district guidelines.
Additional Information
This position requires flexibility beyond the traditional teacher contract to meet compliance timelines, support staff, and fulfill district responsibilities. As a district-level leadership role, this position is not part of the teacher bargaining unit.
