Job Description

ABOUT Slate

At Slate, we've got one job: building a vehicle you'll fall in love with, right here in the USA. We believe that car buyers—not car companies—should call the shots. We like looking at a road, not a screen. We don't like paying for stuff we don't need.
We like picking out the stuff we do need. We think dings are badges, not blemishes. But we know not everyone likes what we like. So, we built you a Slate: you make it yours.

Who we are looking for:

The Tax Manager will manage the company's tax compliance, reporting, and planning. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge in corporate income tax and business property tax and a proven ability to handle a wide range of tax issues in a fast-paced environment. This individual will work closely with senior leadership and other cross-functional teams to ensure tax strategies align with business goals while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.

What you get to do:

Corporate Income Tax:

  • Manage the preparation, filing, and review of corporate income tax returns (federal, state, and local).
  • Manage the company's tax provision, ensuring accuracy and timely filings in compliance with tax regulations.
  • Support tax planning and strategy development to optimize tax positions and mitigate risks.
  • Monitor and implement changes in tax laws and regulations, ensuring the company remains compliant.

Business Property Tax (BPP):

  • Manage and prepare the company's business property tax filings, including the timely and accurate submission of personal property tax returns.
  • Assist with the review and appeal process for property tax assessments to minimize liabilities.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the accounting, legal, and operational teams to provide tax insights on business decisions.
  • Collaborate with external tax advisors and auditors to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Research & Development:

  • Conduct tax research on emerging issues and propose solutions to complex tax challenges.
  • Advise on tax-efficient structuring of business transactions and expansion initiatives.

Tax Audits & Disputes:

  • Assist with managing tax audits, including coordination with external auditors and preparation of relevant documentation.
  • Resolve disputes with tax authorities in a timely and effective manner.

Team Management & Development:

  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance team environment
  • Build out the tax team by hiring qualified tax accountants to ensure the team grows according to business needs

What you bring to the team:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA, JD, or advanced degree (master's in taxation or LLM) preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in tax, with a strong background in corporate income tax, and business property tax.
  • Experience in an automotive or manufacturing environment is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex tax projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Experience with tax compliance, planning, and reporting tools/software. Avalara and NetSuite software experience preferred
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex tax issues to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong sense of accountability and ownership.
