Commercial Finance - ABL Underwriter
Job Summary
Underwrite loans in a timely manner that will result in an acceptable level of credit risk and an appropriate risk return relationship. Underwriting will facilitate the booking of new loans, will ensure that customers understand OCF’s requirements and their responsibilities, will manage the entire underwriting process through closing and affect a smooth transition.
Primary Responsibilities
• Review proposals with salesperson before proposals are submitted to prospects.
• Responsible for underwriting ABL transactions and factoring facilities or facilities that may include an inventory or term loan component.
• Manage the underwriting process – prepare credit approval write up; recommend and set initial debtor limits; evaluate financial statements and other financial data; review legal contracts; review field exams, if applicable, and understand collateral and financial trends indicated therein; gain thorough understanding of the Prospect’s business and company’s asset conversion cycle.
• Meet management of the Prospect, prior to closing larger transactions.
• Manage due diligence and searches workflow and utilize Compliance Manager as needed.
• Manage onboarding of new clients to Operations.
• Due diligence includes a detailed analysis of the historical and projected financial performance of the Prospect to gauge the viability of the business over the term of the proposed credit facility.
• Collateral is reviewed for any potential exposure which should be considered ineligible or reserved from the facility.
• Upon receiving the appropriate internal approval, responsible for drafting and modifying Loan Documents based on the executed proposal and any additional conditions imposed during due diligence. Work with outside counsel to ensure that such terms and conditions are reflected in the drafted documents.
• Understand OCF’s credit policies and minimum underwriting standards.
• Present transactions to Senior Management or Board Loan Committee for approval.
• Assist, train and mentor Underwriting Analysts.
• Perform other ad-hoc duties as required, including underwriting other OCF products.
Qualifications and Skills
These specifications are general guidelines based on the minimum experience normally considered essential to the satisfactory performance of this position. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform the position in a satisfactory manner.
• Experience in analyzing or underwriting factoring and asset-based lending transactions;
• Knowledge of commercial lending with a focus on cash flow and other related technical analysis.
• Organized and attention to detail required to underwrite and understand a diverse group of loan transactions.
• Broad industry knowledge including industry niches such as staffing, manufacturing, service, government and wholesale.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, with the further ability to effectively negotiate documents.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree is preferred with a concentration in accounting or finance;
• 3-5 years’ experience in banking, risk management, secured lending, or commercial lending, with demonstrated strong credit management and financial statement analysis skills;
• Minimum 2-3 years of secured lending experience, with demonstrated track record of accomplishing objectives and exceeding goals;
• Field exam or equivalent experience required
• Thorough knowledge of secured lending with skill set to underwrite large or small transitions for both factoring as well as Asset Based deals.
*This position will comply with all BSA compliance laws and regulations including the Bank’s BSA policy and procedures.
