Position Summary:
The Security Officer is a trusted, responsible professional who works to build relationships within the school community and maintains a regular, visible presence throughout school grounds to protect students, staff and school property. The Security Officer greets students, staff and visitors and ensures only authorized individuals are on school grounds and removes any unauthorized personnel or students. The Security Officer acts as "eyes and ears" of the school, monitoring behavior of students to proactively address disruptions and to deescalate and diffuse altercations while maintaining safety and order. The Security Officer assists with investigations into misconduct, provides reports as needed, and works with the building leaders and Public Safety to maintain a positive, productive and safe environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
Evidence of college credits in Criminal Justice from an accredited college or university is preferred.
Prior experience working in a K-12 setting or with K-12 age students is preferred.
Essential Functions:
Ensure the safety of students, staff and school property by maintaining a constant presence within buildings (during regular school hours and outside school hours, as needed).
Monitor school entrances hallways and exterior grounds; respond to and diffuse disruptions and promote safe and orderly conduct.
Assist with maintaining order on school grounds and buildings.
Ensure doors and windows are secure and a single point of entry is maintained. Conduct wand and/or metal detector searches at entry.
Build positive relationships with students, school staff, and families and contribute to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment for students.
Proactively monitor surveillance cameras to identify potential disruptions to the learning community.
Prevent and control incidents of violence directed against school facilities, students or staff.
Respond to and break up student altercations; notify school administrators and police of potential risks to student safety.
Remain up-to-date and knowledgeable on the student code of conduct and provide reminders to students about the potential consequences when violating the code of conduct.
Assist with immediate on-site investigations of crimes or offenses and assist school leaders and police personnel in collecting and securing evidence, providing witness statements and preparing reports.
Maintain daily logs and reporting (disruptions, visitor logs, infractions, etc.)
Pursue individuals who commit infractions in and around school grounds if necessary to maintain safety and security.
Verify student and staff identification and escort unauthorized individuals from the school grounds.
Use reasonable force to restrain, if needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Security Clearance:
Internal Applicants
If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
External Applicants
In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
