Job Summary:
The Hospice Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional care to terminally ill patients and their families as well as grief support to the family after the death of the patient. Ability to work with people of various religious faiths and cultures. Responsible for developing bereavement programs and overseeing current programs, including social activities and workshops.
Required Experience for Chaplain:
- Graduate of an accredited seminary or school of theology or appropriate certification in hospital or pastoral ministry.
- Certificate or degree in pastoral ministry.
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a chaplain/spiritual counselor, preferred.
- Active patient contact within past three years, preferred.
- Ability to work independently, make accurate, and at times, quick judgments.
- Must be flexible, innovative and possess good interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress and demonstrate emotional stability.
- Acceptance of and adaptability to different social, racial, cultural and religious modes.
Accountabilities for Chaplain:
- Provide direct spiritual support and/or counsel to patients/families in keeping with patients’/families’ beliefs.
- Work with staff, clergy and community groups to enhance their sensitivity to the spiritual concerns of patients/families experiencing terminal illness and loss.
- Participate in IDG conference by exploring and assessing the potential spiritual needs of patients/families and reporting on services as indicated.
- Provide bereavement follow-up services as assigned.
- Maintain proper records of visits to patients/families.
- Contact clergy or appropriate representatives of patients/families as indicated.
- Perform occasional liturgical assignments, e.g., memorial services with staff.
- Conduct or make arrangements for funeral or memorial service when indicated.
- Develop and maintain a resource group of clergies to whom specific aspects of spiritual care may be delegated.
- Arrange for on-call availability of spiritual services.
- Provide educational programs for community clergy, religious and lay representatives as resources allow.
Professional Requirements:
- The ability to work effectively in stressful situations while maintaining a calm demeanor.
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual educational requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty.
- Attends annual review and inservices.
- Attends at least 1 staff meeting / month, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- The Hospice Bereavement Counselor / Chaplain represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the organization.
General Working Conditions:
This position entails standing for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate effectively with others, sit, stand, walk and use hands to handle keyboard, telephone, paper, files, and other equipment and objects. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to review detailed documents and read computer screens. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The work environment requires appropriate interaction with others. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Occasional travel to different locations may be required.
