Reporting to the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), in collaboration with the Associate DIO (ADIO) and the Medical Director of the Orthopedic Service Line for Henry Ford Health, the Program Director (PD) of a Graduate Medical Education (GME) program is responsible for leading the program in accordance with its mission and ensuring the program is compliant with the specialty specific requirements outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and all Henry Ford Health Medical Education policies and procedures including responsibility, authority, and accountability for: administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection, evaluation and promotion of trainees, disciplinary action; supervision of trainees; and trainee education in the context of patient care. It is expected that the Program Director will be engaged in clinical and administrative duties at the residencys primary training site.
Duties And Responsibilities- Residency Program Development and Administration The program director is responsible for development and operation of the ACGME accredited residency/fellowship program that attains and maintains accreditation while providing a high-quality educational experience and environment for house officers, including but not limited to:
- Program Management and Accreditation
- Collaborate with DIO, ADIO, Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) and GME staff as well as Hospitals departments, chairs, and administration to ensure operation of the Program meets or exceeds all ACGME requirements.
- Communicate with ACGME to provide data, reports and communication and respond to specific requests in a timely manner
- Operate program in accordance with Henry Ford Health (HF, GME and Hospital) policies and collaborate with Institutional leadership so that the residency program supports HFHs mission.
- Maintain medical practice and residency program in accordance with Hospital Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of HFH and affiliated institutions.
- Respond promptly to requests from DIO or designee, GME office, Accreditation, or GMEC for information, documentation, and/or participation in GMEC or its subcommittees.
- Maintain accurate and complete house officer and program files in compliance with institutional records retention policies, ACGME and/or other accrediting bodies.
- Oversee and organize the activities and ensure the quality of the educational program in all sites that participate in the program. This includes ensuring a Program Letter of Agreement (PLA) is in place that includes all information required by ACGME or other governing body prior to beginning of rotation.
- Curriculum and Evaluation
- Develop the curriculum for program in compliance with the ACGME Program Specific Residency Review Committee (RRC).
- Ensure the learning objectives are accomplished through supervised patient care responsibilities, clinical teaching, and didactic educational events.
- Faculty
- Select and approve sufficient, qualified program faculty to instruct and supervise all trainees.
- Select and approve Associate Program Directors, Core Faculty and oversee performance of them in these roles.
- Has authority to remove faculty members at all participating sites.
- Provide faculty education and development in the house officer education process including teaching, supervision, advising, feedback, and evaluation.
- Promote faculty wellbeing.
- Learning Environment
- Monitor clinical assignments to ensure that they are appropriate to PGY level, allow advancement, have adequate support services, and do not require non-physician obligations.
- Has the authority to remove residents from supervising interactions and/or learning environments that do not meet the standards of the program.
- Promote house officer wellbeing in a supportive educational environment.
- Ensure house officer education and participation in institutions patient safety and clinical quality improvement activities.
- House Officer Recruitment and Selection
- Establish program specific criteria and selection that comply with HFH and all application and matching organization polices
- Ensure selected candidates meet criteria for trainee eligibility as established by ACGME as well as HFH and the hospital.
- Supervision
- Monitor house officer supervision to ensure adequate, level-appropriate supervision is available to meet patient care and safety needs as well as resident education and practice requirements.
- Monitor work hours to ensure house officer wellness and compliance with ACGME requirements.
- Adjust house officer schedules as necessary to mitigate excessive service demands and/or fatigue.
- House Officer Assessment
- Oversee ongoing feedback, evaluation, and assessment of house officers in all competencies identified by RRC to allow progression with increasing autonomy, including final verification of training competency.
- Create and implement remedial processes for house officers with clinical deficiencies including corrective actions, performance improvement plans and dismissal in accordance with HF Health GME and applicable system policies.
- Management of Program Resources
- Responsible for ensuring, in coordination with GME office and institutions support, the availability of adequate resources for training and education.
- Program evaluation and Improvement
- Responsible for periodic evaluation of the program, including implementation of the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
- Develop and implement improvement plans to address topics identified by the PEC, annual ACGME Resident and Faculty Surveys and other evaluation methods.
- Wellness
- Monitor house officers for physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing and consult with DIO or designee and/or Wellness Director to ensure concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
