The Construction Engineering Inspector, also known as a Construction Services Specialist, oversees and reviews the construction process from the field to ensure that all work complies with approved engineering plans and specifications. This role focuses on infrastructure projects for municipalities and public utilities, including wastewater treatment plants, stormwater systems, drinking water treatment plants, pump stations, roadway utilities, and underground infrastructure related to water supply, water treatment, wellfields, and water distribution systems. The position offers the opportunity to build strong construction engineering skills in both field and office settings while working on local projects in Michigan.
Responsibilities- Observe and inspect construction activities on project sites to ensure compliance with engineering plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
- Document construction activities thoroughly, including daily observations, inspection notes, test results, and other relevant field records.
- Collect, maintain, and organize construction documentation, ensuring accurate and complete project files.
- Review engineering and construction documents, including plans and specifications, prior to and during construction to verify requirements and scope.
- Conduct onsite reviews of construction project sites to confirm that work is performed according to approved plans, specifications, and materials standards.
- Verify the accuracy of design plans at project sites and identify any discrepancies between field conditions and design documents.
- Communicate effectively with contractors and subcontractors to discuss construction activities, clarify requirements, and address issues that arise in the field.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders to maintain strong client relationships and represent the project team professionally on site.
- Propose improvements or recommend alterations to construction methods or materials when necessary, based on field observations and engineering judgment.
- Consult with contractors and engineers regarding construction activities, inspection findings, construction reports, and engineering designs.
- Review changes in construction and materials specifications that result from developments during project construction and confirm proper implementation.
- Provide assistance and technical expertise on construction projects related to reports, inspections, tests, and other engineering records.
- Support both field and office documentation work associated with construction engineering and civil engineering projects.
- At least 3 years of experience in construction inspection or construction observation, or as a civil engineering technician.
- Hands-on field experience with construction engineering or civil engineering projects.
- Experience reviewing construction plans and documentation for infrastructure construction projects.
- Knowledge of construction engineering principles and practices, including construction observation and inspection.
- Familiarity with civil engineering construction for municipal and public utility projects.
- Understanding of infrastructure systems such as wastewater treatment, water treatment, stormwater systems, pump stations, and roadway utilities.
- Ability to interpret and apply construction documents, engineering drawings, and specifications.
- Strong documentation and organizational skills for managing construction records and reports.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with contractors, subcontractors, engineers, and project stakeholders.
- Valid driver’s license for travel to and between project sites.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited college.
- Direct experience as a Construction Inspector or Observer, Construction Engineer, or Civil Engineering Technician, or in a closely related position.
- Experience working on projects involving wastewater treatment plants or water systems infrastructure.
- Background in soil testing and interpretation of results for construction applications.
- Experience with stormwater and storm water systems in municipal or utility projects.
- Familiarity with construction services for municipalities and sanitary systems.
- Interest in developing specialized expertise in wastewater and water systems infrastructure projects.
- Motivation to grow into long-term opportunities such as project management or design engineering roles.
This role involves a mix of field and office work, with significant time spent on outdoor construction sites in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas. The primary current project is located in the City of Kalamazoo and focuses on underground infrastructure for water supply, water treatment, wellfields, and water systems. Field work includes visiting active construction sites, observing and inspecting ongoing activities, and working closely with various contractors and subcontractors. Office work involves reviewing engineering and construction documents, preparing and organizing inspection reports, and maintaining detailed construction records. The work environment is project-focused, offering opportunities to develop construction engineering skills on local municipal and public utility projects and providing a pathway for long-term growth into project management or design engineering.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kalamazoo, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $33.00/hr.
