Course Description

ASTRO 102: Introductory Astronomy: Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe

Discover the nature of stars, black holes, luminous nebulae, supernovae, galaxies, and other cosmic phenomena. In this concept-focused course, you will learn what these objects are, how they formed, and what is ultimately in store for the universe. Explore the roles of light, energy, and gravity in astronomy.

Responsibilities*

This appointment will be either 25% or 50%.

Lecture 100 will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 pm- 2:30 pm with sections held on: Tuesday 3:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesday 4:00 - 5:00 pm, Wednesday 10:00 - 11:00 am, Wednesday 11:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Lecture 200 will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 - 4:00 pm, with sections held on: Wednesday 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Wednesday 2:00 - 3:00 pm, Wednesday 3:00 - 4:00 pm, and Wednesday 4:00 - 5:00 pm.

The GSI should expect to hold 3 hours of office hours every week. Some office hours must be held in person in the Astronomy Help Room on Wednesdays from 1-4pm.

Required Qualifications*

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan (for Winter 2026)
  • Completed courses or have experience in astronomy/astrophysics
  • To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.


Desired Qualifications*

LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

Previous experience teaching courses in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics

Previous experience as a GSI with favorable student evaluations
