Hickory Hills Recreation Area has been owned and operated as a ski area and municipal park by the City of Traverse City since 1952 and has been an iconic natural setting within the Traverse City micropolitan area. Hickory Hills offers 16 runs for skiers and snowboarders, including a bunny hill with a conveyor lift. There are a number of special qualities related to Hickory Hills, but the legacy lies within the hundreds of youth in our area who have grown up on the hill. The memories made at Hickory Hills, learning to ski, spending time with family, and meandering through the snow-covered hills with friends, are shared amongst so many and will last a lifetime. The City’s small, but mighty, hill has served as an authentic sense of home and will continue to do so for generations to come. Additional four-season recreation is offered with an existing hiking trail network and an award-winning Disc Golf course with two 18-hole layouts. This position comes with a free ski pass for the season, and it's a great place to work!

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Hickory Hills Manager or other designated staff, is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, and snow creation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Operate snowmaking equipment for creating manufactured snow from water resources.

2. Conduct regular maintenance checks on equipment, including checking water pipes, fluid levels and volume, temperature controls, energy consumption, and diesel fuel systems.

3. Document and report mechanical/safety issues, complete maintenance logs and checklists.

4. Maintain all safety barriers, padding, and guards around snowmaking equipment.

5. Coordinates daily work with other personnel to ensure safe/accurate/timely completion of work performed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Must be at least 18 years of age and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

- High School Diploma or equivalent.

- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions include wind, snow, ice

- Good communication skills and accurately follow instructions

- Ability to detect errors, determine cause and make corrections

- Ability to problem solve and to think critically

- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when interacting with residents, elected officials and other employees.

RELEVANT DETAILS

Temporary/Seasonal, any day of the week/wknd, typically nighttime hours, $19–$22 per hour .

PHYSICAL DEMAND and WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and communicate effectively. The employee frequently uses hands and arms to operate snowmaking equipment, connect hoses, and make mechanical adjustments. The employee is often required to bend, stoop, kneel, and climb over uneven or icy terrain. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, especially in low-light or night conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors in cold, wet, and snowy conditions, often during nighttime hours. The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, high noise levels from compressors and machinery, and slippery or uneven surfaces. Protective clothing and equipment are required. The noise level in the work environment is typically loud.
