JOB SUMMARY:
The Middle School Assistant Principal reports to the Principal and is responsible for providing assistance to the Principal in the administration of the total school program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate selected for this assignment will be the one who offers the best combination of qualities in accordance with the following standards and requirements:
- The minimum level of education is a master’s degree. Training should include areas of school administration, supervision, curriculum, and child development.
- Substantial experience in a variety of teacher leadership roles is preferred.
- Evidence of the candidate’s ability to provide quality leadership must be demonstrated through:

- a strong sense of honesty and integrity;
- strong problem-solving skills;
- the ability to use a variety of leadership styles, including both the situational and collaborative styles;

- a commitment to community education concepts.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Division of responsibilities may differ from building to building):
- Assist with the articulation of the vision for Teaching and Learning
- Assist in the supervision of the daily operations of the building
- Assist with the development and implementation of the MTSS model
- Administer a program of student discipline, including implementation of restorative and trauma-informed practices
- Administer and lead the scheduling process
- Support standard administration of PBIS and MICIP processes
- Schedule facilities and fields for after-school activities
- Supervise the school custodial and clerical staff
- Manage the lunch and recess program
- Serve on various committees and organizations as assigned
- Assist with staff evaluation
- Assist the principal in supervision of instruction, curriculum development, and school improvement

- Embraces diversity and understands how to engage all stakeholders in the school community
- The ability to closely monitor teaching practices and ensure that both rigor and best practices are occurring in all classrooms
- Designs opportunities to empower students, staff, and parents to be integrally involved in all aspects of the school’s culture and climate
- Commits to high visibility and daily communication with all stakeholders using multiple forms of communication
- Understands the complexities and nuances of hiring, evaluating, inspiring, and mentoring all staff members to exceed expectations
- Analyzes and shares student data and educational research as the foundational principles of Professional Learning Communities
- Networks with county, state, national, and international organizations to assure updated knowledge of best practices and teaching and learning in the 21st Century
- Understands the school’s responsibility to prepare students for their futures in this rapidly changing global society
- Embraces change and innovation, and can envision and actualize learning beyond the traditional walls of the classroom and the school
- Implements character education principles into all facets of the school community Empowers all staff, students, and parents to be integrally involved in all aspects of the school community
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand and walk over 60% of the work day in order to supervise students during change of classes and during lunch periods, walk between classrooms to observe instruction, and rotate throughout the school complex on a regular basis
- Ability to sit up to 40% of the day in meetings, and to sit/stand several times in short periods of time while moving between classrooms and sitting for short intervals of instructional observation
- Ability to walk up and down stairs throughout the day, and walk up/down bleachers or other stepped surfaces while supervising students or extracurricular events. Must be able to work up to 12 hours a day, which includes the full school day and then during after-school extra-curricular activities where administrative supervision and involvement is required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Starting date: August 3, 2026
Compensation: in accordance with the Grosse Pointe Administrators Association Master Agreement
