Position Title: Instructor, Security & Protective Services

FLSA: Exempt

Location: Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center

Department: Career Technical Training

Reports To: Career Technical Training Supervisor

The Instructor, Security & Protective Services position provides support for Human Learning Systems, a Department of Labor Job Corps contractor. The Job Corps program is a federally-funded residential training program. The mission of Job Corps is to provide career-ready technical and academic training with career transition assistance to eligible youth between the ages of 16-24.

Summary of Duties:

Instructs students in maintaining and securing environments for customers and employees by patrolling and monitoring the premises and by performing the following duties:

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Provide students with quality Security & Protection Services instruction in a safe and clean environment which results in high completion and placement performance.
  • Motivate and counsel students in areas of behavior, training, personal problems or study habits; coordinate with counselors and other staff as necessary to resolve issues affecting student training.
  • Develop and prepare lessons; recommend Security & Protection Services curriculum changes and supplemental materials.
  • Participate on student evaluation of students’ progress (ESP); establish quality goals for students during each evaluation period.
  • Maintain students’ accountability by documenting class attendance (class periods) daily.
  • Maintain and monitor progress and attendance records; frequently update individual student progress on training achievement records (TARS).
  • Control use of equipment and supplies; make minor repairs; recommend purchases.
  • As applicable, assist in the planning and implementation of CTST projects, provide supervision of students assigned to CTST projects or other center career and technical training projects.
  • Provide students with experiences and practices to help them meet each of the eight career success standards.
  • Assist in developing community linkages and work based learning (WBL) sites for the Security and Protective Services training program.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area that models high standards for a work environment.
  • Provide positive, quality customer service to students, staff and other center customers.
  • Ensure students learn and practice set behavioral expectations that support employability and social development for career readiness success.
  • Support and promote Center’s “Zero Tolerance” policies.
  • Promote the development of Career Success Standards by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students where necessary and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions.
  • Maintain accountability of students and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • Follows all integrity guidelines and procedures and ensures no manipulation of student data.
  • Ensures Center meets or exceeds DOL/Human Learning Systems performance goals.
  • Responsible for providing students with training leading to Security & Protection Services completion and industry-recognized certifications. Provides students with comprehensive and individualized case management that ensures student progress, achievement and completion of the Job Corps program.
  • Provides quality Security & Protective Services training and curriculum that leads to student placement.
  • Provides students with job leads and monitors placement of all graduates.
  • Ensures classroom is well organized and conducive to student learning.
  • Holds students accountable for following Center's dress code/behavioral standards of conduct.
  • Produces quality work/assignments in a thorough, timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintains appropriate personal attendance, accountability and work productivity standards.
  • Plans, prioritizes and organizes assignments to meet established goals and deadlines.
  • Understands and applies job knowledge to effectively complete all required job responsibilities. Proactively maintains the skills required to perform job duties.
  • Provides high-quality supervision and management for the student population. Takes swift and appropriate action and positively influences student behavior. Shows respect and courtesy to students and holds them accountable for their actions and behavior.
  • Provides quality Security & Protective Services programming and services for students ensuring that quality is maintained and student needs are met.
  • Pursues improvement and enhancement of programs and services.
  • Exchanges ideas and information, both orally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner and contributes meaningfully to group efforts by offering relevant ideas and knowledge.
  • Provides quality and timely information regarding Security & Protection Services programming to DOL/Human Learning Systems, when requested.
  • Effectively articulates thoughts and ideas. Identifies problems, analyzes causes and evaluates appropriate solutions prior to taking or recommending actions. Follows up to ensure prompt/appropriate action is taken and that problems are in fact corrected.
  • Works in partnership with staff from all departments to ensure effective supervision and services are provided to students.
  • Pursues improvement and enhancement of the Security & Protective Services program and with the assistance of the BCL organizes a Worforce Industry Council.

PROVIDE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION

  • Follow Security & Protection Services curriculum guidelines, organizes program of practical

and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in trade

  • Maintain a strong instructional focus utilizing the elements of effective instruction
  • Communicate a high level of expectation to all students
  • Communicate clear learning goals to students
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students
  • Develop lessons and lesson plans that address various learning styles
  • Sequence content at an appropriate pace
  • Use appropriate level of questioning to promote understanding
  • Relate lesson content to prior and future learning
  • Require students to summarize information in written and/or verbal form
  • Appropriately recognize and reinforce individual student effort
  • Represent knowledge/information non-linguistically through a variety of methods
  • Organize students in cooperative or ability groups when appropriate
  • Require students to analyze and apply knowledge
  • Conduct ongoing assessments for learning
  • PROVIDE EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Effectively and consistently enforce rules and follow procedures

  • Redirect students naturally and immediately without disrupting others
  • Be well-organized and have all materials, equipment, etc., ready for immediate use
  • Carry out smooth and effective transitions (e.g., from one activity to another, as students

enter and leave the classroom)

  • Establish appropriate classroom rules and procedures that are clearly understood by

all students

Monitors Student’s behavior: Ensures proper conduct of students in all areas. Assists staff with behavior problems coordinating referrals to PBSO as required. Creates methods and programs to motivate constructive student behavior. Maintains awareness of the individual needs of various minority and cultural groups. Monitors accountability process.

Develops Students: Establishes high level of mutual trust and support with others. Expresses positive expectations of others, even in difficult situations. Creates a learning atmosphere. Reassures and encourages performance improvement. Provides timely coaching. Identifies successes and areas of improvement. Participates on a center committee.

Teamwork: Builds pride and commitment though effective teamwork and collaboration. Adheres to established company policies and procedures, and supports all programs. Makes effective use of time, materials and resources by planning, scheduling and organizing work. Communicates in an open and honest manner.

Modeling, Mentoring and Monitoring: Demonstrates on-going commitment to preparing young people for the workforce by modeling, mentoring and monitoring excellence in the eight Career Success Standards of: workplace relationships and ethics; information management; communications; multicultural awareness; personal growth and development; career and personal planning, and; interpersonal skills; independent living.

Career Management Team (CMT) : Contributes to the success of students by participating in the CMT process. The CMT is responsible for students’ successful matriculation through the Job Corps program from CDP (Career Development Phase) through Career which includes receipt of the academic, CTT, employability, Career Success Standards, and social skills necessary to attain and maintain a viable post-Center placement. Teams are required to ensure that each graduate receives a placement within 9 months of separating from the program as well as complete a successful 6 and 12 month survey. CMT will responsible to ensure that the following areas are functioning within each CMT: CTTRC, Projected Separations, High School Equivalency, CTT and CTT Credential, Literacy and Numeracy TABE, Evaluation of Student Progress, WBL, Career Transitions Readiness, CSS, Employability Skills, Contextual Learning, Career Transitions/Career.

Workplace Standards: Maintains required certifications and/or licenses including a valid driver’s license and insurance when required by position. Does not engage in activities other than official business during working hours. Reports significant/major incidents or accidents. Cooperates in external/internal investigations as requested. Completes PRH, Human Learning Systems and Center training as required and demonstrates competencies accordingly. Complies with DOL, Human Learning Systems and Center guidelines.

Credentials:

Education and Experience

Certification in the IFPO Certified Protection Officer Instructor Program or state-sanctioned Security certification to assist in the training & delivery of the Certified Protection Officer Program

Certifications, Licenses, Registration

IFPO Certified Protection Officer certification or state-sanctioned Security certification

Valid Arizona driver’s license,

CPR/First Aid certifications (within 90 days)

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
