Job Summary

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants with a Ph.D. for a full-time new Lecturer III position with a start date of August 25, 2026. This is a non-tenure track position, with a University Year appointment period (e.g., from August 25 to May 24).

A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three (3) courses (or the equivalent) per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties. The initial appointment period will be four (4) years and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.
Mission Statement

The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.
Responsibilities*

Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position are expected to include teaching introductory biology courses (Biology 171 and Biology 173), coordinating project-based labs, holding office hours and providing administrative support for these courses. This Lecturer III position will also include supervising and coordinating a large team (>25) of graduate student instructors and undergraduate teaching assistants. BIO 171 Introductory Biology: Ecology and Evolution is a lecture course that provides a rigorous overview of major themes in ecology, evolutionary biology, and genetics, and serves over 1,200 undergraduate students each year. Biology 173 Introductory Biology Laboratory is an integrative laboratory course intended for majors in any of the biological sciences, other science programs, and pre-professional studies, and serves over 1,900 undergraduate students each year. Importantly, given the size of Bio 171 and Bio 173, teaching and supporting these courses counts as multiple course equivalents per semester.
Required Qualifications*

Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in biological sciences, preferably with a focus on ecology and evolutionary biology. The successful candidate should provide evidence of prior teaching experience in designing and managing large enrollment laboratory courses and/or introductory biology courses at the college level. The candidate should have knowledge of evidence-based pedagogy and classroom technologies used in very large course settings. Experience in troubleshooting lab techniques including molecular tools (i.e., PCR, gel electrophoresis), bacterial plating, and/or experimental design is preferred. Excellence in teaching and instructional service will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.
