Title I: College and Career Readiness Counselor

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated College and Career Readiness Counselor to serve at a private high school in the city of Detroit from April - June 2026.

The College and Career Readiness Counselor will guide and support high school students in preparing for their post-graduation goals, focusing on college admissions, career exploration, and future workforce development. The counselor will provide personalized counseling services to help students identify their strengths, interests, and pathways, while ensuring they are equipped to make informed decisions about their educational and career trajectories

Key Responsibilities:

College and Career Exploration:

  • Assist students in exploring and identifying potential career pathways based on their interests, strengths, and academic goals.
  • Provide guidance on college admissions processes, including application procedures, essay writing, and financial aid opportunities.
  • Facilitate career exploration activities such as job shadowing, internships, career fairs, and guest speaker events.
  • Help students research post-secondary education options, including two- and four-year colleges, vocational schools, apprenticeships, and military opportunities.

College and Career Planning:

  • Support students in selecting appropriate high school courses that align with their career and college aspirations.
  • Advise students on course load management and academic requirements to meet the demands of their chosen post-secondary institutions or career paths.
  • Provide one-on-one counseling for students applying to colleges, scholarships, internships, and apprenticeships.
  • Guide students in developing resumes, cover letters, and interview skills for job searches, internships, and college applications.

College Admissions and Financial Aid Guidance:

  • Provide in-depth support in the college application process, including researching institutions, selecting the best fit, writing personal statements, and meeting deadlines.
  • Assist students and families with understanding and completing financial aid applications, including FAFSA and scholarship opportunities.
  • Coordinate college visits, workshops, and other events to familiarize students with the admissions process and financial aid options.

Workforce Readiness:

  • Help students develop skills for entering the workforce, including professional communication, job searching, resume building, and interview preparation.
  • Collaborate with local businesses, community partners, and post-secondary institutions to provide job training and apprenticeship opportunities for students.
  • Implement career readiness programs such as mock interviews, workplace etiquette workshops, and job shadowing experiences.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure students are on track to meet their post-secondary goals.
  • Provide regular updates to parents/guardians regarding student progress, college and career preparation, and upcoming deadlines.
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and external resources (e.g., community organizations, businesses) to ensure students have access to opportunities.

Data and Reporting:

  • Track and report on student progress toward post-graduation plans, including college acceptances, scholarships, and workforce placements.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ college and career readiness activities and interventions.
  • Complete Title compliance documentation in a timely manner.
  • Prepare reports on the outcomes of college and career readiness programs and initiatives.

Professional Development and School Leadership:

  • Stay current on trends in college admissions, career readiness, workforce development, and financial aid processes.
  • Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and professional development to enhance counseling practices and college/career readiness initiatives.
  • Participate in school-wide programs and committees aimed at improving post-graduation success for all students.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field (required).
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, College Counseling, or a related field (preferred).
  • Valid state certification or licensure as a school counselor (required).
  • Proven experience working in a high school setting with a focus on college and career readiness programs.
  • Strong knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid, career exploration, and workforce development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with students, parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to develop and lead college and career readiness workshops, presentations, and events.
  • Organizational skills to track multiple student progress and maintain accurate data.
  • Commitment to ensuring equitable access to post-secondary opportunities for all students.
