Senior Research Attorney - Court of Claims (Detroit, Grand Rapids or Lansing, MI)

The Court of Claims seeks a qualified candidate for a Senior Research Attorney position. Under the direction of the four judges assigned to the Court of Claims every two years, the individual in the position will prepare research reports and assist in drafting opinions and orders for matters filed in the Court of Claims. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Under the direction of the requesting judge, review pleadings, conduct independent research, and draft an opinion and order.

• Provide advice to a judge on problem areas, complex legal issues, and recommended outcomes for individual issues and disposition of a proceeding. Prepare reports that contain a comprehensive presentation of the material facts, a recitation of the issues raised by the parties, a thorough analysis of the law and facts on each issue, and a recommendation as to the appropriate disposition based on a well-reasoned application of the law to the facts with citation to supporting authority.

• Conduct electronic research on the Court’s database, online and print research, and off-site library research, as necessary.

• Prioritize work generally in accordance with the order in which the requests are received, while balancing the need for stricter time constraints as required by particular proceedings.

• Attend or review transcript of hearings and trials conducted in a proceeding as requested by a judge.

• Review/stay apprised of recent published decisions of the Michigan Court of Appeals, Michigan Supreme Court, and United States Supreme Court and of revisions to statutes and court rules.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Three or more years of progressively more responsible experience involving legal research and writing, including clerking at the Court of Appeals or other judicial forum. Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in the State Bar of Michigan.

WORK LOCATION: Cadillac Place, Detroit, MI; State Office Building, Grand Rapids, MI; or Hall of Justice, Lansing, MI. Flexible work options, including remote work, may be available for this position. However, the candidate selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment.
