POSITION SUMMARY:

The Transportation Specialist is responsible for difficult to complex grant and administrative projects requiring diverse, advanced knowledge and expertise relating to transportation, transit, community planning and development, land use, safety, strategic planning, grant development, and community engagement. The position is responsible for reading, interpreting, and developing plans to implement projects including providing materials and completing assigned tasks to assist in carrying out project requirements. The specialist also assists with preparing, submitting, and reporting on grants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Provides assistance and support as it relates to transportation, transit, community planning, land use, strategic planning, grant development, and community engagement
  • Assists in grant writing, proofing, and submitting of grant proposals to funding agencies
  • Creates and maintains portfolios and files for recordkeeping of grants, contracts, and projects.
  • Researches grant opportunities and disseminates the information appropriately.
  • Responsible for accurately collecting, entering, and tracking data for accurate and timely report preparation.
  • Updates Transportation website and drafts meeting materials, forms, reports and correspondence.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Assists with the community-based planning process and facilitating community meetings.
  • Assists with developing plans and monitoring goals and objectives.
  • Provides technical support for the Transportation Department as needed.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers, membership, and outside vendors/service providers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position light with lifting of 20 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant sitting, use of hearing, near vision, typing; frequent use of midrange vision; stooping, reaching, bending, manual handling, use of far vision, depth perception, and color/field of vision. Working conditions include frequent exposure to noise and occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, and vibration. Potential hazards include constant computer use.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in business, office administration, or a related field is preferred.

Experience: Four years’ experience working in a Tribal office environment is required.

Certification/License: May be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and multi-task required. Strong computer background with skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is a must. Must have working knowledge of office machines such as calculator, copier, fax, printer, scanner and phone. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Prior experience compiling reports and writing proposals and formal correspondence is needed. A high attention to detail and good grammar skills are required. Must exhibit professionalism and have strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to work cooperatively and build positive working relationships with co-workers, other departments, programs, and the general public. Must maintain confidentiality.
