Principal Function :
- A disciple of Jesus Christ who works with the priest in solidum to foster a positive experience of worship, prayer, and liturgical experiences, which help people encounter Jesus. There must be a special focus on the Sunday experience and on ensuring the connection between worship and evangelization.
- A professional minister who coordinates the scheduling of all sacraments, liturgical celebrations, and prayer services, which include coordinating with the Director of Faith Formation and Youth Minister the Rites within the OCIA process, to ensure the integrity of the liturgical year.
- Understands the significance of cultural diversity in evangelization and ministry.
Position Responsibilities:
- Is concerned with all aspects of the Liturgy and collaborates with all parish ministries and the Archdiocesan Worship Office.
- Develops and establishes objectives to realize and accomplish parish and Archdiocesan goals and ecclesiastical norms into liturgical area.
- Work includes administrative, worship, and educational responsibilities.
- Collaborates with the parishes of the West Oakland Family of Parishes.
- Including attending AOD monthly worship zoom meetings and follows up with staff on what was discussed.
- Attends monthly worship committee meetings
- Works in collaboration with the Director of Music Ministry.
- Responsible for the weekend liturgies - Saturday at 5 PM & Sunday at 8 AM, 10 AM, and 12 Noon
- Responsible for special celebrations which include but not limited to:
- Christmas and Easter.
- Baptism of the Lord, Ash Wednesday, St. Mary’s Feast Day, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Pentecost, Holy Days of Obligation, All Saints Day, All Souls’ Day, May Crowning, and Civic Holidays.
- Penance Services in Advent and Lent for parish and faith formation.
- Confirmation, First Holy Communion in the Spring.
- Corpus Christi Procession and First Friday Adoration.
- St. Francis Blessing of Pets
- Weekly Eucharistic Adoration
- Monthly Praise & Worship Adoration
- Other various liturgical and seasonal events
Key Responsibilities for the Position of Worship Director:
- Cooperates with the parish priests and staff members in working for the good of the entire parish.
- Communicates with all whose work affects or is affected by liturgical celebrations.
- Works with faith formation personnel, and all parish groups in the preparation of liturgical celebrations.
- Trains, coordinates, and schedules liturgical ministers (lectors, altar servers, ushers, EMHCs, sacristans) and various volunteers whose work relates to liturgical functions (e.g. liturgical environment and linen washers), including forming teams to oversee certain liturgical functions.
- Maintains records of all liturgical ministers through Ministry Scheduler Pro.
- Understands the annual budget, maintains expenditures within the budget allotted. Meets with the priest and bookkeeper to finalize annual budget.
- Orders all materials for liturgical celebrations: candles, wine, hosts, vessels, etc. Processes check requests for all invoices and stipends.
- Attends parish and worship functions to promote volunteerism and to make the parish aware of the position of Worship Director.
- Coordinates funeral planning, scheduling, and ministries with the funeral homes and family members of the deceased.
- Secures and prepares facilities before and after events. Requests events to be added to the parish calendar.
- Coordinates priest coverage for liturgical functions and emergency calls when parish priest is not available.
- Serves as the parish contact for the Archdiocesan Worship Office.
Qualifications for the Position of Worship Director:
- Understands the role of worship within the Catholic Church’s mission of evangelization.
- Mission driven and a creative problem solver.
- Understands Catholic teaching on evangelization as presented in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the documents of Vatican II, Papal encyclicals, documents of the USCCB, and other relative Church documents.
- Is familiar with the Ordo, Rite Books, General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), and liturgical calendar.
- Good verbal and written communication skills; has good interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style.
- Good computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office and Ministry Scheduler Pro) and familiarity with church AV equipment.
- Demonstrates a commitment to high professional and ethical standards.
- Has organizational skills required to manage many people and projects.
- Experience or training related to liturgical formation.
- Experience working in a church or similar environment.
