The Instructor of Residence Life is a live-in teaching position that is responsible for building community and caring for students in a designated area of the Residence Halls. Instructors of Residence Life are members of the faculty and are responsible for developing educational programming, instructing students on life skills, advising and mediating student concerns, enforcing policy, creating safe communities, advising student groups, and developing other special projects. This is an In Residence position where Instructors of Residence Life have dorm type living areas and meals are during dining hall hours. This is an academic year position that works from late August until late May. Housing is included as are meals in Stone Cafeteria.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Student Instruction and Support

  • Instructs students in the areas of living skills, social-emotional learning, and behavioral growth.
  • Provides care and a variety of direct support services to students in a residential setting and assists with the oversight of the residential education program.
  • Responsible for the implementation of educational and social learning that develop social and emotional skills, student leadership, intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, and are developmentally appropriate.
  • Builds and provides freedoms and structures that contribute to the overall learning and development of the student as appropriate for the variety of age levels we serve.
  • Facilitates the development of communities that are welcoming and accepting of people of all races and ethnicities, abilities, ages, genders, national origins, religions, and sexual orientations.
  • Supports leadership development for students in a variety of areas including academics, student groups, student representative board, programming and international student liaisons, and health and wellness.
  • Assesses and mediates student conflict and has the skills to sufficiently listen to and summarize individual and group concerns.
  • Interprets and enforces policies and procedures that relate to student conduct concerns.
  • As an active, live-in member of a diverse campus community, actively engages students in programming and conversations about diversity and social justice and confronts situations of bias that result from lack of understanding.
  • May be required to transport students to local medical facilities if needed.

Communication, Collaboration, and Consultation

  • Builds relationships with a variety of campus partners in an effort to strengthen student support tailored to their students' needs.
  • Provides detailed narratives to the student and family through the grade reporting process relating to personal growth and skill development.
  • Communicates with faculty and family on issues that directly impact the student.
  • Ability to work as a team member and lead by example
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate respect for cultural, ethnic, spiritual and linguistic diversity and values including differences in personal goals, lifestyle choices and varying family backgrounds and histories
  • May require work outside of a traditional 8-hour work day to deal with particular student or parent issues.

Administrative

  • Responsible for detailed administrative and record-keeping tasks related to the care of students.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation on student growth, learning, and family communication.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through with timely administrative tasks.
  • Strong customer service skills in answering phone calls as well as transferring calls and follow up calls.

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Resident Assistant or similar experience preferred
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Experience mentoring/guiding young people
  • Experience with the Google Suite preferred
  • Due to the nature of the work, and the combined work/living arrangement, candidates must be able to work extended work days as situations may arise beyond normal working hours
  • May require work outside of a traditional 8-hour work day to deal with particular student or parent issues.
  • Ability to follow and execute specific verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect for cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and linguistic diversity and values including differences in personal goals, lifestyle choices and varying family backgrounds and histories.
  • Ability to set clear expectations and boundaries and hold students accountable
  • Ability to respond to crisis situations in a calm manner
