We are seeking a collaborative and innovative High School Principal with communication and interpersonal skills that will lead our school community toward ever-improving student outcomes. The ideal candidate believes that true leadership is rooted in relationship-building, proactive support, and shared accountability. Mancelona’s High School Principal will help to create a school culture that balances high academic and behavioral expectations with the support necessary to allow every student to succeed.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in school administration or related educational field with a valid Michigan School Administrator certificate
- At least five years of K-12 classroom experience
- Instructional leadership skills including a strong understanding of content standards, effective instructional practices including formative assessment, differentiated instruction, and data analysis to support all student learners and teachers/staff
- Interpersonal characteristics necessary for working effectively, from a restorative lens in a trauma-informed manner, with students, staff, parents, and the community • Strong communication skills, verbally and in writing, to effectively share information, actively listen to diverse perspectives, and respond clearly to questions or concerns • Organizational and management skills to provide a comprehensive plan for meeting graduation requirements for students, certification requirements for teachers, and day to-day operations (i.e., school-day activities, extracurricular events, and community needs) within a high school setting
Responsibilities
- Cultivate a positive and safe school culture by enhancing a school environment that demonstrates mutual respect and psychological safety to ensure every student and staff member feels a deep sense of belonging and is empowered to take educational risks. A safe school culture also includes participating in required school safety drills and working with the School Resource Officer to implement physical safety protocols. The high school principal will be responsible for student discipline with a restorative approach (including high levels of accountability and opportunities to repair harmed relationships).
- Build proactive relationships by being highly visible and accessible to students and staff before and after school, throughout student lunches, and during instructional times. The principal will be expected to be visible at after-school events and extracurricular activities. Developing collaborative relationships with Central Office staff and other administrators and directors and their staffs throughout the district is imperative.
- Maintain uncompromisingly high academic and behavioral standards for ALL students, pairing those expectations with the robust, differentiated supports necessary to meet
diverse learner needs. With a team, determine needs for curriculum resources, materials and supplies, time and staff to provide these opportunities.
- Creatively expand academic, extracurricular, and vocational experiences so every student is prepared for meaningful post-secondary opportunities, whether that is college, career, or civic engagement.
- In collaboration with the school counselor, design and implement a master schedule creatively tailored to meet the diverse needs of all learners, ensuring equitable access to advanced coursework, interventions, and electives.
- Conduct teacher evaluations through the lens of meaningful, coaching-based conversations designed to grow staff capacity, celebrate strengths, and provide actionable feedback while meeting compliance requirements.
- Cultivate a professional environment that balances teacher autonomy and creativity with a collective responsibility to the school’s vision for improved student outcomes. Discuss strategies openly during building- and district-level meetings.
- Actively recruit, mentor, and retain a diverse, highly effective staff by fostering a supportive and collaborative workplace culture.
- Create an open, responsive environment where parents and families are viewed as essential partners in the educational process.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent
