Job Summary:

The Cost Accountant will be responsible for analyzing manufacturing costs, monitoring operational variances, and ensuring accurate inventory valuation across raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods. This role prepares detailed cost reports, reconciles standard versus actual costs, and supports month-end and year-end close activities related to inventory and cost of goods sold. They will collaborate closely with Production, Supply Chain, and site leadership to investigate discrepancies, drive cost reduction initiatives, and support budgeting and forecasting processes. The position also ensures compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and participates in external audits. Additionally, this role contributes to continuous improvement efforts by developing dashboards, tracking KPIs, and enhancing process efficiencies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Conduct detailed analysis of manufacturing costs and operational variances, including materials, labor, and overheads.
• Support the location's General Manager with all aspects of manufacturing process cost analysis.
• Monitor and reconcile variances between standard and actual costs; investigate and explain discrepancies.
• Perform month-end and year-end close activities related to inventory and cost of goods sold.
• Review and update bills of materials (BOM) and routings in the ERP system.
• Support inventory valuation processes to ensure accurate reporting of raw materials, WIP, and finished goods.
• Participate in periodic inventory counts and reconcile physical counts to system records.
• Prepare cost-related journal entries, supporting schedules, and detailed manufacturing cost reports.
• Validate monthly COGS data for assigned locations and support external audits.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and site Process Control Policies.
• Provide financial insight into production processes, yield optimization, and cost reduction initiatives.
• Assist in developing dashboards and KPIs to track production and financial performance.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and participate in cross-functional projects to improve systems and processes.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Strong understanding of cost accounting principles, inventory valuation, and standard costing.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills.
• Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
• Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficient in financial software and Excel.
• Commitment to confidentiality and compliance.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 3+ years of experience in cost accounting.
• Experience in the cannabis or manufacturing industry is a plus.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics BC.
