LOCATION: Creekside Intermediate School



Hours:

Monday-Friday, 7.5 hours per day estimated, or as determined by production and school schedule needs. Work schedule and number of hours subject to change and to be determined by F&N Director. May include assignment to other program facilities as determined by service, production and personnel needs.



Salary and Benefits: Step 1 or applicable step of the current DESPA salary schedule.



Job Summary:
Prepare and serve nutritious and attractive meals for consumption in a school cafeteria, maintain required records and a clean, safe and efficient work and serving environment. Lead others in the kitchen in a positive manner, following district policies and department procedures.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is the leader for a production and service kitchen serving the Creekside Intermediate School students. The nature of this position requires frequent communication and discussion with the Food & Nutrition Director/Designee. The kitchen manager reports directly to the F&N Directors, and all discussions require confidentiality unless otherwise specified.

This position requires successful demonstration of creative menu and marketing ideas, inventory control and ordering, participation and sales development, and the understanding of budget requirements and profit and loss statements. Positive communication with building principals and staff is also a necessary element to the position.

Minimum:

  • Successful demonstration of high levels of personal interaction, organizational skills, marketing, bookkeeping, and customer relations in a service organization.
  • Ability to interact positively with children, adolescents, and adults, including students with special needs while taking part in the operations of the kitchen.
  • Successful demonstration of food service meal production and presentation, including special dietary preparation skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain high standards of sanitation and cleanliness in food production and personal practices.
  • Knowledge and ability to understand and apply National School Lunch/Breakfast regulations.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate quantity food production equipment.
  • Ability to maintain effective cost control measures.
  • Ability to determine ordering needs and work with vendors.
  • Basic nutrition knowledge.
  • Ability to determine daily production needs pertaining to both food and labor.
  • Ability to utilize a computer as a tool of operation. Proficient in programs such as Excel, Word as well as navigating internet-based programs.
  • Ability to run a register and follow cash handling procedures.
  • Ability to work independent of continuous supervision.
  • Successful demonstration of excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written or spoken directions.
  • Possess English language proficiency and pleasant tone.
  • Ability to correctly perform basic arithmetic skills.
  • Lead training/retraining of all staff members in the kitchen.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make logical decisions.
  • Delivery of food to various local facilities, with possession of appropriate license.
  • Serve-Safe Certification every 5 years or as required by the Washtenaw County Health Department. If not currently certified must become so within 3 months of accepting the position.


Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful demonstration of school F&N Kitchen Manager experience.
  • Successful demonstration of special dietary food preparation.


Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this job require bending, standing for long periods, and the ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs of weight. An F&N employee must be able to work safely around all kitchen equipment, cooking, steaming and holding units, knives and a dishwasher.
