Job Description

The Night Shift Process Technician (Senior Process Technician Level 3–4) sets up, optimizes, and troubleshoots plastic injection molding processes on a rotating 12-hour night shift. You will work closely with mold setters, material handlers, and machine operators to ensure stable production, high-quality parts, and efficient operation of injection molding presses and associated robotics.

Responsibilities

• Set up, adjust, and optimize plastic injection molding processes on Cincinnati presses ranging from 350 tons to 1950 tons.
• Collaborate with mold setters and material handlers to ensure the correct resins are loaded and properly in place for each machine.
• Verify valve gates are correctly installed and functioning before and during production runs.
• Monitor machine performance and respond when operators report three consecutive bad parts or when ten defective parts are detected within an hour.
• Troubleshoot process issues on plastic injection machines, including problems related to material flow, part quality, and cycle times.
• Ensure material, temperature, and water settings are correctly established and maintained for each press and mold.
• Follow and maintain step-by-step process check sheets for each machine to ensure consistent and repeatable setups.
• Troubleshoot robots when they are bumped out of position or not picking up parts correctly or quickly enough.
• Escalate issues that require additional programming or reprogramming to the robot programmer when needed.
• Support a safe and organized production environment by following established procedures and reporting equipment or process concerns promptly.
• Participate in training and continuous improvement efforts to enhance process stability and product quality.
• Complete required documentation and process tracking accurately for each production run.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of experience as a process technician.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience working with plastics in a manufacturing environment.
• At least 2 years of previous experience setting molds for plastic injection molding.
• At least 3 years of experience starting up plastic injection machines.
• Hands-on experience with plastic injection molding processes, including setup, optimization, and troubleshooting.
• Ability to troubleshoot process issues on plastic injection machines and related equipment.
• Experience working with plastic materials such as nylon, polypropylene, and acetal (polyoxymethylene).
• Familiarity with plastic injection molding equipment and process documentation.
• Ability to work 12-hour rotating night shifts on a 2-on, 2-off, 3-on, 3-off schedule, including every other weekend.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with Cincinnati injection molding presses is highly beneficial.
• Background in writing or refining process sheets or procedures for injection molding machines is a strong plus.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional production teams, including mold setters, material handlers, and machine operators.
• Comfort troubleshooting basic robotic handling issues and knowing when to escalate to a robot programmer.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining consistent process parameters.
• Good problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to quality or process deviations.
• Willingness to participate in additional training and schooling opportunities to expand technical skills.

Work Environment

This role is based in a plastic injection molding manufacturing environment in the Grand Rapids area, within a network of four main facilities located close to each other. Process technicians are assigned to a specific plant and remain with that facility rather than rotating between sites, allowing you to become deeply familiar with the equipment and processes in your area. You will work primarily on night shift with a rotating 12-hour schedule from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. (training will occur on day shift, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., for the first week or two). The schedule follows a 2-on, 2-off, 3-on, 3-off pattern, resulting in work every other weekend and approximately 15 workdays per month. The production floor operates multiple Cincinnati injection molding presses ranging from 350 tons to 1950 tons, running materials such as nylon, polypropylene, and acetal (polyoxymethylene), and uses robots for part handling. The environment is typical of a high-volume plastics manufacturing facility, requiring adherence to safety procedures, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and readiness to work around large machinery and automated systems.

This is a Permanent position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

The pay range for this position is $47840.00 - $49920.00/yr.

There are quarterly bonuses paid out. Cascade has excellent medical benefits. Additional trainings and schooling offerings. Medical benefits start on day one of employment as a direct employee. The employee only yearly deductible is $300 per year and the weekly premiums are pretty low. They start out with two weeks vacation for a year but it is prorated depending on when they start.
