Position Summary :
The Beer & Wine Department Manager oversees all aspects of cellar operations, from product evaluation to inventory management. This role involves placing orders, maintaining margins, and ensuring attractive product presentation. This position will coordinate tasting events, manage staffing, and foster team development. The Beer & Wine Department Manager is also responsible for upholding customer service standards and compliance with state laws, as well as handling returns and disciplinary matters for direct reports. This is a supervisory position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Taste, evaluate, and make notes on beer & wine products as presented by sales reps or presented at tasting events.
  • Place beer and wine orders as dictated by operational needs.
  • Delegate ordering responsibilities to the Beer Buyer as needed.
  • Assist in the selection and curation of products.
  • Receive and check orders, submit invoices, and manage credits/returns.
  • Ensure product is at the correct price point for department margin goals and as required by law.
  • Maintain labor percentage in accordance with labor goals (6–8%).
  • Ensure products are stocked well, rotated, and merchandised in an attractive manner.
  • Coordinate appropriate signage for products.
  • Coordinate product with the Chief Marketing Officer for demo and sampling.
  • Set-up, staff, and clean-up weekly wine tastings (or assign the appropriate people to do so).
  • Staff out-of-store events as requested.
  • Participate in manager and department meetings as needed.
  • Maintain clean and orderly backstock and display areas.
  • Attend local beverage shows.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Self direct study of beer & wine products.
  • Follow up on customer requests and special orders.
  • Follow up of department phone calls and messages.
  • Contribute to the personal and professional development of team members.
  • Issue staff correction and discipline in a manner consistent with Company policies.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, and training of Beer & Wine Team Members.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
  • Manage customer returns/replacements in a manner consistent with state law.

Non-Essential Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Personally staff live beer & wine demos.
  • Assist customers in other departments as needed.
  • Assist with bottle returns.
  • Required Qualifications & Skills:
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Must have detailed wine knowledge.
  • Experience palate, with emphasis on analytical tasting abilities.
  • Ability to train new personnel.
  • Ability to generate turns and product movement.
  • Ability to optimize product mix for profit margin overall program diversity.
  • Ability to process invoices and returns.
  • TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol certification.

Special Considerations :

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Working conditions include a fast-paced retail environment that involves long intervals of standing, crouching and reaching while moving product. Occasional exposure to cold temperatures when working in coolers. Some outdoor work is required.
  • Language Skills: high.
  • Mathematical Skills: intermediate.
  • Reasoning Ability: high.
  • Equipment used: price gun; price scanner; cardboard bailer; trash compactor; ice machine, Clover register.
  • Computer skills: POS System; email; Google Drive; Paycor.

Hours per Week : Full-time (40 hours per week)

FLSA Classification : Non-exempt
